Methodology for the Path Definition in Multi-Layer Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)

David Curiel et al.

Summary: The reconstruction of weld-deposited materials' geometry plays a crucial role in controlling the torch path in GMAW. This study integrates a profiling laser into the production system to scan and reconstruct the geometry of deposited beads, enabling the determination of a continuous trajectory based on the analysis of previous layers' geometry and symmetry. Experimental results show a surface quality of around 100 microns and mechanical properties consistent with previous literature reports for a wall fabricated under demanding deposition conditions.

Automated process planning for conformal wire arc additive manufacturing

Prahar M. Bhatt et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing, particularly wire arc metal additive manufacturing, is a revolutionary process in the manufacturing industry that allows for the building of complex parts without the need for specific tooling. This research aims to overcome the limitation of flat substrates used in wire arc additive manufacturing by exploring conformal substrates. The research also focuses on addressing the complexities of process planning and validation to build conformal metal parts. Several novel contributions are made, including exploratory experiments, the development of algorithms for bead defect detection and process-specific tool-path planning, substrate placement planning, and the characterization of built parts' mechanical properties.

On-line monitoring and defect detection of arc-welding via plasma optical spectroscopy and LIBS

J. J. Valdiande et al.

Summary: This study uses plasma optical spectroscopy and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy to analyze the effects of different perturbations on a tungsten inert gas welding process. By analyzing and comparing the spectra acquired with two setups, more information about the process evolution, dynamics, and chemical composition of the seams is obtained. The analysis of different elements provides rich information about weld quality and enables online monitoring of arc welding processes. Elements such as lithium or sodium, which are not commonly used in spectroscopic analysis of welding processes, provide interesting information on surface defects and contamination. Additionally, LIBS 2D scanning allows for a detailed analysis of the resulting elemental distributions.
