Summary: The application of Pr-Nd-Dy alloy in high-performance Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet materials has great potential. This study investigates the composition and element distribution of the electrolyte system used in the production of Pr-Nd-Dy alloy. The effects of temperature and lithium fluoride addition on electrolyte conductivity and liquidus temperature are analyzed. The optimal process conditions for producing Pr-Nd-Dy alloy are determined.

Recycling rare earths: Perspectives and recent advances

Yoshiko Fujita et al.

Summary: Demand for rare-earth elements (REEs) is projected to increase significantly by 2040. Recycling offers a solution to the challenges of opening new mines, but collection and disassembly of REE-containing devices pose obstacles. However, secondary sources of REEs differ in abundance from primary sources, presenting both challenges and opportunities. Recycling REEs from e-wastes can offset costs and also enable the recovery of precious or base metals.

Influence of Rare Earth Oxide Concentration on Electrochemical Co-Deposition of Nd and Pr from NdF3-PrF3-LiF Based Melts

Vesna S. Cvetkovic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of rare earth oxide (REO) concentration on the deposition process and selective recovery of the metal being deposited in a molten fluoride salt system. By constructing a phase diagram and using different deposition techniques, co-deposition of neodymium and praseodymium was achieved, leading to higher co-deposition rates and a more effective deposition process.

Recovery of Rare Earth Elements through Spent NdFeB Magnet Oxidation (First Part)

Srecko Stopic et al.

Summary: NdFeB magnets are widely used in various technological applications due to their remarkable magnetic properties. However, their limited recycling and China's monopoly on rare earth elements supply pose economic and environmental challenges. This paper proposes a pyrometallurgical recycling method for end-of-life NdFeB magnets by oxidizing them in air. The experimental results show that the material is completely oxidized at 1100 degrees C, resulting in the formation of various metal oxides.

Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from Spent NdFeB-Magnets: Separation of Iron through Reductive Smelting of the Oxidized Material (Second Part)

Hanwen Chung et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a pyrometallurgical recycling method for end-of-life NdFeB magnets, achieving the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) and producing a new concentrate. The metal phase obtained from the smelting process has a high Fe content, while the slag phase contains a mixture of RE-oxides and Fe2O3. The obtained slag concentrate can be further treated to obtain rare earth elements.

Dissolution and Online Monitoring of Nd and Pr Oxides in NdF3-PrF3-LiF Electrolytes

Samuel Senanu et al.

Summary: The study focused on monitoring the concentrations of dissolved rare earth metal oxides in different fluoride electrolytes using a graphite probe at high temperatures. It was found that the peak current determined by the probe can reflect the concentration of the dissolved oxide, showing a good correlation with the concentrations obtained by the inert gas fusion technique.

Vesna S. Cvetkovic et al.

Summary: The electrodeposition processes of neodymium and praseodymium were studied in molten electrolytes, showing that constant praseodymium deposition overpotential is crucial for achieving high deposition current densities. Various electrochemical techniques were applied to understand the reduction mechanisms of Nd and Pr ions on different cathodes, providing valuable insights for environmentally friendly rare earth metal deposition and recycling of neodymium-iron-boron magnets.
