Investigation of ball-milling process on microstructure, thermodynamics and kinetics of Ce-Mg-Ni-based hydrogen storage alloy

Fei Song et al.

Summary: By preparing Mg90Ce3Ni7 alloy through medium-frequency induction melting and mechanical ball-milling process, the study found that ball-milling improves the hydrogen storage performance of the alloy by changing its microstructure. The alloy milled for 20 hours can absorb over 3.5 wt % of hydrogen within 30 minutes at 100 degrees C, indicating its potential for practical applications.

Hydrogen Absorption Reactions of Hydrogen Storage Alloy LaNi5 under High Pressure

Toyoto Sato et al.

Summary: In this study, the hydrogen absorption reaction of LaNi5 under high pressures above 1 GPa was investigated, and it was found that LaNi5 absorbed 2.07% hydrogen at 6 GPa, indicating a higher hydrogen storage capacity compared to reactions below 1.0 MPa. Additionally, the hydrogen-absorbed LaNi5Hx decomposed into NiH under high-pressure conditions, and a new hydride phase with different crystal parameters was observed.

Impact of severe plastic deformation on kinetics and thermodynamics of hydrogen storage in magnesium and its alloys

Kaveh Edalati et al.

Summary: Magnesium and its alloys are extensively studied for solid-state hydrogen storage, but there are challenges in the kinetics and thermodynamics of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation. Severe plastic deformation methods have been utilized to improve the activation, air resistance, and kinetics of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials by introducing ultrafine/nanoscale grains and crystal lattice defects. These deformed materials, particularly with alloying additives or second-phase nanoparticles, exhibit fast hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics and good cycling stability. The study also highlights the application of severe plastic deformation methods in hydrogen binding-energy engineering and the synthesis of new magnesium alloys for reversible low/room-temperature hydrogen storage.

Microstructure and hydrogen storage properties of Ti-V-Mn alloy with Zr, Ni, and Zr7Ni10 addition

Zhenyu Feng et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluates the effects of Zr, Ni, and Zr7Ni10 addition on the phase composition, microstructure, and hydrogen storage properties of Ti23V40Mn37 alloy. It is found that Zr addition positively affects activation property and hydrogen absorption capacity, while reducing hydrogen desorption property. On the other hand, Ni addition has the opposite effect. Under the synergistic effect of Zr and Ni, the alloy with Zr7Ni10 addition shows excellent comprehensive hydrogen storage properties of fewer activation cycles and better hydrogen desorption property.
