Influence of Ca addition on microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of Mg-5Bi-3Al alloy extruded at extremely high speed

Jae Won Cha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Ca addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-speed-extruded Mg-Bi-Al alloy. It was found that adding Ca resulted in the formation of coarse Mg2CaBi2 particles and weakened particle hardening, leading to a decrease in tensile strength by 10%. However, the addition of Ca also enhanced the tensile elongation by 21% by suppressing local strain concentration and promoting the formation of twin variants. This research concludes that a small amount of Ca can improve the tensile ductility of high-speed-extruded Mg-Bi-based alloys without altering the alloy texture.

Role of oxides in the formation of hole defects in friction stir welded joint of 2519-T87 aluminum alloy

Tie Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of oxides in the formation of hole defects in the friction stir welded joint of 2519-T87 aluminum alloy. It is found that oxides are present at the edge of tunnel hole and in the micropores in the joint. The oxides tend to aggregate in the weak region of material flow, preventing material contact and diffusion, resulting in hole defects.

Effect of welding speed on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Mn-Zr-Ti alloy sheet during friction stir welding

Tian Ding et al.

Summary: The study examined the effects of welding speed on microstructure evolution in the stir zone and mechanical properties of friction stir welding joints. It was found that increasing welding speed led to a decrease in DRX grain size. The combination of 1500 r/min rotation speed and 75 mm/min welding speed resulted in the best tensile properties for the joints.

Quantitative analysis of grain structure and texture evolution of dissimilar AA2024/7075 joints manufactured by friction stir welding

Chenghang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the grain structure and texture evolution of dissimilar AA2024 and AA7075 joints at three welding speeds using electron backscatter diffraction. Dynamic recrystallization in the nugget zone was found to generate fine equiaxed grains, with average grain size and recrystallization degree decreasing with higher welding speeds. Different shear texture components were formed, with shear textures decreasing significantly as welding speed decreased. The variation in grain structure and shear textures was largely influenced by welding heat inputs at different welding speeds.

Influence of temperature on microstructure, crystallographic texture and mechanical properties of EN AW 6016 alloy during plane strain compression

Arkajit Ghosh et al.

Summary: Al-Mg-Si alloys have been increasingly used in automotive and aerospace industries, with a focus on improving the formability of the alloy. Plane strain compression tests were conducted on EN AW 6016 alloy at different temperatures, revealing changes in flow properties and anisotropy due to temperature variations. Finite element modeling was used to explain the impact of temperature on flow behavior, and detailed microstructural and texture analyses were performed. The significant increase in volume fraction of Goss texture at high temperatures was found to have a significant impact on formability.
