Impact of Ural blocking on sub-seasonal Siberian cold anomalies modulated by the winter East Asian trough

Yuanyuan Song et al.

Summary: The meridional displacement and strength of the winter East Asian trough (EAT) can potentially modulate the persistence and strength of Ural blocking (UB) events and associated cold anomalies over Siberia. Strong or southward EAT winters are more conducive to frequent and intense UB events, leading to stronger sub-seasonal cold anomalies over Siberia. The physical cause of why a strong or southward EAT favors UB is related to changes in winter zonal wind and meridional gradient of potential vorticity near the Ural Mountains, influencing the nonlinearity and energy dispersion of UB.

Impact of winter blocking on surface air temperature in East Asia: Ural versus Okhotsk blocking

Jaeyoung Hwang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of atmospheric blockings on wintertime surface air temperature in East Asia using three blocking indices. It finds that both Ural and Okhotsk blockings lead to cold anomalies in East Asia, but through slightly different mechanisms.

Impact of the Scandinavian Pattern on Long-Lived Cold Surges over the South China Sea

Bo Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of the Scandinavian (SCA) pattern on long-lived cold surges over the South China Sea (SCS). The results show that long-lived cold surges over the SCS are mainly preceded by a negative phase of the quasi-stationary SCA pattern in the extratropics, which is characterized by cyclonic and anticyclonic centers. This connection is mainly through the amplification of high pressure anomalies over East Asia, and the SCA pattern may also influence the long-lived cold surges by facilitating blocking occurrences through the anticyclone over central Siberia.

Decadal Change of Heavy Snowfall over Northern China in the Mid-1990s and Associated Background Circulations

Botao Zhou et al.

Summary: Analysis of observation data using the EOF method from 1961 to 2014 shows a shift in the primary mode of heavy snowfall over northern China in winter from a negative to a positive polarity in the mid-1990s. The atmospheric circulation also changed accordingly, possibly influenced by the shift in the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO).

Dynamic Control of the Dominant Modes of Interannual Variability of Snowfall Frequency in China

Bo Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the first two leading modes of the interannual variability of frequency of snowfall events over China in the winter during 1986-2018. The findings reveal that these modes are influenced by synoptic-scale wave activity over the midlatitudes of the East Asian continent and the North Atlantic Oscillation. Negative sea ice anomalies in the Barents Sea-Kara Sea region may lead to increased northerly cold advection over central-eastern China, while La Nina-like conditions in January may induce southerly water vapor transport anomalies over the same region.

Contribution of the Northeast Cold Vortex Index and Multiscale Synergistic Indices to Extreme Precipitation Over Northeast China

Xianghua Wu et al.

Summary: The study analyzes and quantifies the impact of the northeast cold vortex index (NECVI) and multiscale synergistic indices on extreme precipitation over Northeast China using nonstationary generalized extreme value models. Results show that NECVI and synergies have significant contributions to extreme precipitation, especially in late summer. Additionally, the study verifies the importance of NECVI through likelihood ratio tests and blank control experiments, providing insights into the mechanism of extreme precipitation over Northeast China.

Arctic sea-ice loss fuels extreme European snowfall

Hannah Bailey et al.

Summary: The loss of Arctic sea-ice leads to increased evaporation, which in turn fuels extreme winter snowfall in Europe. Observation data from 2020 shows a significant correlation between evaporation from the Barents Sea and Europe's maximum snowfall.

Regions of intensification of extreme snowfall under future warming

Lennart Quante et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the impact of climate change on the frequency and intensity of snowfall, highlighting that extreme snowfall events are expected to intensify across large areas of the Northern Hemisphere in the next few decades due to global warming. This is likely to pose challenges for municipalities in mid to high latitudes.
