Persisting cancer mortality gap between western and eastern Europe

Claudia Santucci et al.

Summary: In Europe, there has been a favorable trend in cancer mortality over the past three decades, but this trend has been less favorable for most eastern European countries. While cancer mortality rates have been declining in western Europe since 1990, rates in eastern Europe only started to decline in the 2000s for men and remained stable for women. The mortality rates for lung cancer and other cancers are higher in eastern Europe compared to western Europe. Differences in lifestyle patterns and the implementation of improvements in cancer diagnosis and management contribute to the persisting disparity in cancer mortality between western and eastern Europe.

Lost productivity due to head and neck cancer mortality in Hungary, Poland, and Romania

Goran Bencina et al.

Summary: Head and neck cancer leads to significant mortality burden and productivity losses in Hungary, Poland, and Romania. The total PVFLP due to premature HNC-related deaths in these countries is estimated to be euro 449 million, highlighting the importance of reducing the burden of HNC through multidisciplinary approaches including prevention policies and improved diagnostic techniques. Reducing the burden of HNC not only decreases productivity losses but also has a positive impact on other cancer indications and related illnesses.

De-escalation of Systemic Therapy for Early-Stage, Node-Negative Her2+and Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Lorena Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that de-escalation of systemic therapy, especially in early-stage Her2+ and triple-negative breast cancer, may be an effective strategy to improve short-term outcomes. Further prospective research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of omitting systemic therapy in triple-negative breast cancer.

The European cancer burden in 2020: Incidence and mortality estimates for 40 countries and 25 major cancers

Tadeusz Dyba et al.

Summary: This article presents the incidence and mortality estimates for 25 major cancers across 40 individual countries within European areas and the EU-27 for the year 2020. The most common cancers are breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers, which account for half the overall cancer burden in Europe. The estimates provide a basis for setting priorities in cancer-control measures across Europe.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
