Thermal diversity affects community responses to warming

Bingzhang Chen

Summary: Scientists often use an exponential equation to model the responses of community metabolic rates to temperature, but this contradicts the unimodal temperature performance curves of individual species and ignores the difference between intraspecific and interspecific temperature sensitivity. This study explores the impact of thermal diversity on community temperature responses and finds that high thermal diversity dampens the community productivity response to temperature due to lower interspecific temperature sensitivity. In addition, high thermal diversity enables the community to better track environmental temperature fluctuation and withstand high temperature inhibition.

Microbial diversity through an oceanographic lens: refining the concept of ocean provinces through trophic-level analysis and productivity-specific length scales

Cora Hoerstmann et al.

Summary: This study investigated microbial diversity and primary productivity in the Atlantic Ocean between 50 degrees south and north, revealing distinct diversity patterns among different provinces. Samplewise productivity-specific length scales were calculated to provide key context for further analysis, linking diversity patterns to oceanographic transport through primary production.

Cell size as driver and sentinel of phytoplankton community structure and functioning

Helmut Hillebrand et al.

Summary: From a systematic literature review, it was found that there are consistent and significant allometric relationships between cell sizes and the functional performance of phytoplankton species. Additionally, there is a rich literature on how cell sizes change in response to various environmental factors, which helps in understanding the impact of cell size on phytoplankton community dynamics. In conclusion, cell size is a highly predictive trait for phytoplankton metabolism at the cellular scale and serves as a suitable sentinel of phytoplankton responses to changing environments.

Decadal trend of plankton community change and habitat shoaling in the Arctic gateway recorded by planktonic foraminifera

Mattia Greco et al.

Summary: The Fram Strait is experiencing significant changes in its marine biota due to increasing advection of Atlantic species, as observed in plankton profiles collected over the past three decades. The trend towards more Atlantic species is independent of local environmental conditions, indicating higher production of these species in the Nordic Seas and their subsequent transport into the Fram Strait. Additionally, ongoing sea-ice export from the Arctic has so far buffered larger plankton transformation, but a decrease in sea-ice export could lead to rapid restructuring of the pelagic community in the Arctic gateway region.

Variations of microbial communities and substrate regimes in the eastern Fram Strait between summer and fall

Anabel von Jackowski et al.

Summary: The seasonal variations in biopolymers, microbial abundance, and microbial composition in the upper 100 meters of the Fram Strait were investigated during summer and fall. The study found a shift in the autotrophic community from picoeukaryotes dominating in summer to an increase of Synechococcus by fall. Additionally, a decline in biopolymers concentrations was observed along with increasing microbial diversity and a community shift towards fewer polymer-degrading genera in fall.

Interactive effects of temperature and nitrogen source on the elemental stoichiometry of a polar diatom

Nicolas Schiffrine et al.

Summary: This study experimentally tested the growth and elemental stoichiometry of an Arctic diatom, Chaetoceros gelidus, under different nitrogen sources (ammonium, nitrate, urea) and temperatures (0-9 degrees C). The results showed that temperature had an effect on the N : P ratio, but the optimal growth temperature was similar in all cases. The C : N ratio, however, varied significantly with temperature. The study suggests that C. gelidus has the ability to remain competitive despite environmental changes.

Diversity and biogeography of planktonic diatoms in Svalbard fjords: The role of dispersal and Arctic endemism in phytoplankton community structuring

Summary: Understanding the community structure of Arctic phytoplankton is crucial for predicting the response of Arctic ecosystems to ocean warming. This study investigated the diversity and biogeography of diatoms in the Svalbard area and found that they exhibit different biogeographic distribution types and are structured by local environmental gradients. The finer biogeographic patterns observed within certain genotypes suggest that they can serve as indicators of the influence of Atlantic waters on the phytoplankton community in the region.

The Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the globe since 1979

Mika Rantanen et al.

Summary: Analyses of observations and climate simulations suggest that Arctic Amplification has been stronger than expected and underestimated in climate models. This finding indicates the urgency and severity of Arctic warming.

Rapid Atlantification along the Fram Strait at the beginning of the 20th century

Summary: The recent expansion of Atlantic waters into the Arctic Ocean is clear evidence of rapid changes occurring, and understanding the past variability of this Atlantification is crucial to provide a longer perspective on modern Arctic changes. Reconstructions based on paleoceanographic records show rapid changes began in the early 20th century, before documented Atlantification. Comparison with regional records suggests a poleward expansion of subtropical waters since the end of the Little Ice Age.
