First genomic resource for an endangered neotropical mega-herbivore: the complete mitochondrial genome of the forest-dweller (Baird?s) tapir (Tapirus bairdii)

Caroline C. Ennis et al.

Summary: This study reports the complete mitochondrial genome of the Central American Tapir, and examines its phylogenetic position among closely related species. The mitochondrial genome contains protein-coding genes and ribosomal RNA genes, and has a similar gene order to other tapir species. Analysis shows that these genes have undergone strong purifying selection, and phylogenetic analysis supports the classification of this species.

Complete mitogenome of Ganges river dolphin, Platanista gangetica gangetica and its phylogenetic relationship with other cetaceans

Ajit Kumar et al.

Summary: The Ganges river dolphin is an endangered cetacean that has experienced a significant reduction in distribution range due to increasing anthropogenic activities. The study of its complete mitochondrial genome provides insights important for identifying evolutionary relationships and monitoring the endangered species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the river dolphins studied were polyphyletic, with Platanista having a more basal placement than other river dolphins like Lipotes, Inia, and Pontoporia.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the Honduran white bat Ectophylla alba (Allen 1982) (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae)

Isabela Vivas-Toro et al.

Summary: This study developed the first genomic resource for the Honduran white bat (E. alba) and analyzed in detail its complete mitochondrial genome. The mitochondrial gene arrangement in E. alba is the same as in other bats within the same family, indicating purifying selection in all protein coding genes.

Assembling mitogenome of Himalayan Black Bear (U. t. laniger) from low depth reads and its application in drawing phylogenetic inferences

Amrita Bit et al.

Summary: The study assembled the complete mitogenome of the Himalayan black bear using a modified approach of mitochondrial baiting and mapping, revealing similarities in gene arrangement and codon usage with other subspecies of Asiatic black bear. The analysis showed that low-depth sequencing data can rapidly recover the mitochondrial genome, providing an efficient alternative to traditional long-range PCR methods for phylogenetic inference.

A timely systematic review on pangolin research, commercialization, and popularization to identify knowledge gaps and produce conservation guidelines

Sean P. Heighton et al.

Summary: Conservationists can benefit from a holistic approach by considering research, social, and economic aspects of conservation issues. The study focused on pangolin conservation, highlighting knowledge gaps in areas such as immunology, education, and the impact of trade or poaching, especially for African species. It also noted a shift in publication trends towards non-range-state author contributions and highlighted the importance of increasing research efforts, particularly in Africa, to help conserve pangolins.

Sex identification based on the CHD gene from Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) fecal DNA samples

Jiashen Tian et al.

Summary: A reliable noninvasive PCR method for sex identification of Gentoo penguins was developed based on amplification of the CHD gene. The method successfully identified sex based on sex-specific band patterns, and initial results suggest potential applicability for other penguin species. This study demonstrates the feasibility and accuracy of using DNA extracted from fecal samples for sex determination in penguins.

Underestimating the Challenges of Avoiding a Ghastly Future

Corey J. A. Bradshaw et al.

Summary: The article highlights the urgent need for action on major environmental issues that are often overlooked. It emphasizes the significant threats to the biosphere and humanity from future environmental conditions, and questions the preparedness of political and economic systems to handle predicted disasters. Scientists are urged to speak candidly and accurately about the challenges of creating a sustainable future, as lack of awareness on the scale of the problems and solutions hinders society from achieving sustainability goals.
