The argininosuccinate synthetase can differentially regulate nitric oxide synthase in yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco

Muzi Zhang et al.

Summary: Fish are at high risk of ammonia exposure in aquaculture systems, which can lead to increased susceptibility to diseases. The study investigated the role of argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS) in regulating urea synthesis and nitric oxide synthesis in fish. The results showed a correlation between ASS expression and disease outbreak. The targeted regulation of ASS improved immune response in fish under ammonia stress.

Effects of partial replacement of dietary flour meal with seaweed polysaccharides on the resistance to ammonia stress in the intestine of hybrid snakehead (Channa maculatus ♀ x Channa argus ♂)

Zhiheng Zuo et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of partial replacement of dietary flour meal with seaweed polysaccharides on survival rate, histology, intestinal oxidative stress levels, and expression of immune-related genes in hybrid snakeheads under acute ammonia stress. The results indicated that adding seaweed polysaccharides to the diet could improve the survival rate of hybrid snakeheads under high concentration of ammonia stress.

The effects of acute and chronic ammonia exposure on growth, survival, and free amino acid abundance in juvenile Japanese sea perch Lateolabrax japonicus

Muzi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ammonia tolerance of Japanese sea perch and found that the growth and farming performance of perch were inhibited when the ammonia concentration exceeded 0.28 mg L-1 T-AN. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid prolonged exposure of Japanese sea perch to high ammonia concentrations in the farming process.

Effects of acute ammonia exposure and recovery on the antioxidant response and expression of genes in the Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway in the juvenile golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus)

Ming-Jian Liu et al.

Summary: Continuous exposure to high levels of ammonia can cause oxidative damage to fish tissues and organs. Through an ammonia exposure experiment, it was found that as exposure time increased, various physiological indicators in juvenile golden pompano showed continuous changes. The regulation of the Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway in response to ammonia exposure showed a positive correlation with liver antioxidant gene expression levels, indicating a potential mechanism for antioxidant defense in fish exposed to ammonia.

Ammonia spatiotemporal distribution and risk assessment for freshwater species in aquatic ecosystem in China

Bo Fan et al.

Summary: This study calculated the national aquatic life criteria for ammonia in China, and found a decreasing trend in ammonia and NH3 pollution, with some basins showing an increasing trend. Different species taxa show varying sensitivity to ammonia, with Perciformes fish identified as a priority protected species. The ecological risk assessment results indicate a certain impact of long-term exposure to NH3 on affected species.

The effects of acute and chronic exposure of ammonia on juvenile burbot (Lota lota) growth and survival

Ben Vaage et al.

Summary: High concentrations of un-ionized ammonia significantly reduce food consumption and growth rate of burbot, but fish exposed to 0.03 and 0.06 mg.L-1 UIA gradually acclimate, with food consumption and growth rates returning to normal levels after 30 days. Recommendations suggest keeping UIA levels <= 0.03 mg.L-1 to avoid measurable reductions in growth rate.

Effect of ammonia stress on transcriptome and endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway for common carp (Cyprinus carpio) hepatopancreas

Shuqun Xue et al.

Summary: The study investigated the gene expression profiles in common carp hepatopancreas under ammonia stress, identifying differentially expressed genes involved in metabolic pathways such as protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum. Ammonia stress induced apoptosis in hepatopancreatic cells, mediated by the endoplasmic reticulum stress and unfolded protein response signaling pathways.
