Changes in working memory brain activity and task-based connectivity after long-duration spaceflight

Ana Paula Salazar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of spaceflight on brain activity and connectivity. While no significant effects on spatial working memory performance or brain activity were found due to spaceflight, significant changes in brain connectivity were observed from pre- to post-flight.

Brain and Behavioral Evidence for Reweighting of Vestibular Inputs with Long-Duration Spaceflight

K. E. Hupfeld et al.

Summary: Microgravity alters vestibular signaling and affects vestibularly mediated behaviors. This study used fMRI to investigate the changes in brain activity in response to vestibular stimulation before and after spaceflight. The results showed widespread reductions in somatosensory and visual cortical activation after spaceflight, indicating sensory compensation and reweighting. These brain changes correlated with changes in balance and recovered to baseline values after 3 months. These findings provide evidence for sensory reweighting and adaptive cortical neuroplasticity with spaceflight.

Ocular counter-roll is less affected in experienced versus novice space crew after long-duration spaceflight

Catho Schoenmaekers et al.

Summary: Otoliths, as primary gravity sensors, play a crucial role in controlling ocular counter-roll (OCR) and gaze stabilization. Prolonged spaceflight has been found to decrease OCR, particularly in first-time flyers. However, experienced cosmonauts exhibit better adaptation after G-transitions.
