Huaier granule prolongs overall survival after curative resection of hepatocarcinoma carcinoma: A propensity score analysis

Shaoju Luo et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of huaier granules in prolonging overall survival and reducing recurrence risk after curative resection of HCC has been demonstrated. Specifically, for solitary HCC with a diameter <= 30 mm, huaier granules can improve overall survival, while for solitary HCC with a diameter >30 mm, huaier granules can improve both overall survival and recurrence-free survival.

Current Perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicines and Active Ingredients in the Therapy of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Yuyao Li et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading lethal tumor worldwide, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used to effectively treat HCC with unique medical theories and practical experience. Recent systematic clinical trials have evaluated the efficacy of commonly used TCMs in the treatment of HCC and explored the underlying anti-HCC mechanisms. These findings promote the modernization of TCM study in oncology and have the potential to substantially reduce the burden of HCC in the future.

Huaier Inhibits Gastric Cancer Growth and Hepatic Metastasis by Reducing Syntenin Expression and STAT3 Phosphorylation

Yunfu Shi et al.

Summary: Huaier, a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used in the clinical treatment of gastric cancer. This study found that the n-butanol extract of Huaier suppressed tumor growth and metastasis by inhibiting the syntenin/STAT3 signaling pathway and reversing EMT.

Staple line lockstitch reinforcement decreases clinically relevant pancreatic fistula following distal pancreatectomy: Results of a propensity score matched retrospective analysis

Feng Tian et al.

Summary: This retrospective study found that staple line lockstitch reinforcement for remnant closure during distal pancreatectomy can reduce the rate of postoperative pancreatic fistula. There were no significant differences in major complication rates and length of hospital stay after surgery between the two groups.

The natural medicinal fungus Huaier promotes the anti-hepatoma efficacy of sorafenib through the mammalian target of rapamycin-mediated autophagic cell death

Zhengguang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential therapeutic efficacy and mechanisms of combining Huaier with Sorafenib for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. The results demonstrate that the combination treatment can effectively inhibit cancer cell proliferation, promote apoptosis and autophagy, and suppress tumor growth in mouse models. The underlying mechanism may be related to the mTOR-mediated autophagic cell death pathway, suggesting that Huaier can enhance the sensitivity of hepatocellular carcinoma cells to Sorafenib.

Huaier shows anti-cancer activities by inhibition of cell growth, migration and energy metabolism in lung cancer through PI3K/AKT/HIF-1α pathway

Xiangli Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that Huaier, through inhibiting cell viability and migration, suppressing glycolysis and lactic acid accumulation, was able to reduce NSCLC tumor volume and growth. In addition, intervention in the PI3K/AKT/HIF-1 alpha pathway may be one of the mechanisms by which Huaier exhibits its anti-tumor effects.

A Phase II Clinical Trial on the Combination Therapy of PHY906 Plus Capecitabine in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Chun A. Changou et al.

Summary: The combination of PHY906 and capecitabine showed effectiveness as salvage therapy for HCC patients with previous systemic treatments. It can improve clinical outcomes and reduce side effects, with better outcomes observed in patients who had not received previous chemotherapies or targeted therapy, had lower starting AFP levels, or had HBV infection.

Huaier granule prevents the recurrence of early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma after thermal ablation: A cohort study

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: Clinical trials have shown that Huaier granules in combination with thermal ablation can benefit HCC patients by improving overall survival, progression-free survival, and reducing extrahepatic metastatic rates. Younger patients with single tumors and tumors smaller than 3 cm may experience better outcomes with the integrated treatment approach.
