Nutritional evaluation, phytochemical makeup, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of wild plants utilized as food by the Gaddis-a tribal tribe in the Western Himalayas

Arti Thakur et al.

Summary: Medicinal plants are widely recognized for their crucial role in traditional healthcare and their potential in biodiversity protection. However, there is limited information on the medicinal uses of plants in the interior Himalayan regions. Therefore, this study investigated the nutritional qualities, phytochemical analysis, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial activity of five underutilized wild edible plants in the Himalayan hinterland. The findings revealed that these plants are rich in various nutritional and phytochemical compounds, and their methanolic extracts showed significant free radical scavenging and antibacterial activities. These results validate the potential of these wild edible plants as alternative sources for medicine and nutritional supplements.

Nupur Srivastava et al.

Summary: This study aimed to chemico-biologically standardize Kaempferia galanga rhizome and investigate the vasorelaxation potential of its key phytochemical, ethyl-p-methoxycinnamate (EPMC). The results demonstrated that EPMC is responsible for vasorelaxation through endothelium-independent response mediated by Ca2+ dependent potassium channels. The study also developed a validated HPLC method for quality assessment of KGR, which allowed faster quantitation of EPMC and ethyl cinnamate compared to classical GC techniques.
