Effect of vortioxetine vs. escitalopram on plasma BDNF and platelet serotonin in depressed patients

Anja Dvojkovic et al.

Summary: Escitalopram and vortioxetine are effective antidepressants that target the serotonin system, with vortioxetine having a unique mechanism of action compared to SSRIs. Vortioxetine was found to significantly increase plasma BDNF concentration and decrease platelet 5-HT concentration, while escitalopram mainly reduced platelet 5-HT concentration. Response to vortioxetine was not predicted by baseline BDNF or platelet 5-HT concentration, highlighting the need for further research on the long-term effects and clinical implications.

Interaction effect of serum serotonin level and age on the 12-week pharmacotherapeutic response in patients with depressive disorders

Wonsuk Choi et al.

Summary: High baseline serum 5-HT levels and age >= 60 years are associated with the highest 12-week remission rates in patients with depressive disorders undergoing antidepressant treatment, with a significant multiplicative interaction effect. These findings suggest that the association between baseline serum 5-HT level and 12-week antidepressant treatment outcomes varies according to patient age.
