Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy in Spinal Cord Injury: Mechanisms and Prospects

Ji-Le Xie et al.

Summary: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction with significant economic costs. MSCs show promise as transplant cells for SCI treatment, due to their multipotency, trophic and immunomodulatory abilities, and ease of isolation. However, understanding the concept of MSCs is crucial for high-quality research in the field.

The efficacy of GABAergic precursor cells transplantation in alleviating neuropathic pain in animal models: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Shaghayegh Askarian-Amiri et al.

Summary: The efficacy of GABAergic neural precursor cells in managing neuropathic pain was determined through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results showed that these cells have a moderate level of effectiveness in improving symptoms of allodynia and hyperalgesia, especially in rats. Genetically modified cells were found to be more effective in improving pain symptoms.

NEUROPATHIC PAIN: FROM MECHANISMS TO TREATMENT

Nanna Brix Finnerup et al.

Summary: Neuropathic pain is a common chronic pain condition caused by lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system, characterized by ongoing or intermittent spontaneous pain. Evoked pain may spread to neighboring areas and is associated with peripheral and central sensitization processes.

Preemptive Stem Cells Ameliorate Neuropathic Pain in Rats: A Central Component of Preemptive Analgesia

Hassan Kotb et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficacy of intravenously injected mesenchymal stem cells in treating neuropathic pain either before or after its induction. Results showed that the stem cells had reached the cerebral cortex and exhibited anti-inflammatory effects. The injected group with MSCs before induction showed few stem cells expressing specific proteins, while the group injected after induction showed numerous proliferated stem cells expressing these proteins in the cerebral cortex.

Therapeutic effects of peripherally administrated neural crest stem cells on pain and spinal cord changes after sciatic nerve transection

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that NCSC-laden nerve scaffolds helped alleviate neuropathic pain and enhance motor function recovery in rats with sciatic nerve injuries. Furthermore, NCSCs were found to protect the spinal cord from glial cell activation and central sensitization induced by nerve injury.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Sheet Promotes Functional Recovery and Palliates Neuropathic Pain in a Subacute Spinal Cord Injury Model

Kazuyoshi Yamazaki et al.

Summary: The study confirmed that self-produced bone marrow stem cell sheets showed better results in a rat subacute SCI model, promoting significant motor and sensory recovery and displaying smaller injury lesion volume and less inflammation in histological evaluation. These findings suggest that BMSC cell sheets may be a more effective treatment option for SCI.
