A relatively dry mantle transition zone revealed by geomagnetic diurnal variations

Huiqian Zhang et al.

Summary: The water content in the mantle transition zone is found to be very low, which has important implications for material circulation and partial melting in the mantle. However, further research is needed in this field to fully understand its significance.

G. D. Egbert et al.

Summary: The research introduces a novel approach to empirical modeling of global DV magnetic fields using frequency domain principal components analysis (PCA) to analyze spatial and temporal patterns of ground-based geomagnetic data and physics-based model outputs. This method establishes a continuous FD model for studying mantle electrical conductivity and Earth's deep water cycle.

Time-Domain Modeling of Three-Dimensional Earth's and Planetary Electromagnetic Induction Effect in Ground and Satellite Observations

Alexander Grayver et al.

Summary: This study presents a general framework for modeling three-dimensional EM induction effects in conducting planets, considering time-varying current systems and arbitrary distribution of electrical conductivity. The method is applicable to data measured at stationary observation sites and satellite platforms, enabling near real-time calculations of three-dimensional EM induction effects.

Full-waveform inversion with source and receiver coupling effects correction

Xinhai Hu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the importance of coupling factors of sources and receivers for inversion success, utilizing a full-waveform inversion scheme to correct these factors, incorporating a linear inversion to estimate source and receiver factors, and applying variable projection technique to invert model parameters without prior knowledge of the factors. The efficacy of the inversion scheme is demonstrated through synthetic examples and real data tests.

Probing 3-D electrical conductivity of the mantle using 6 years of Swarm, CryoSat-2 and observatory magnetic data and exploiting matrix Q-responses approach

Alexey Kuvshinov et al.

Summary: This study presents results of mapping three-dimensional variations of the electrical conductivity in depths ranging from 400 to 1200 km using 6 years of magnetic data, and investigates the effect of different combinations of input data sets on transfer functions. A new global 1-D conductivity profile is also proposed based on a joint analysis of satellite tidal signals and global magnetospheric Q-responses.

Electrojet Estimates From Mesospheric Magnetic Field Measurements

K. M. Laundal et al.

Summary: Traditional measurements of the auroral electrojet using magnetometers on ground or in low Earth orbit are limited by sparse distribution and distance constraints, leading to incomplete understanding of its spatiotemporal characteristics. Recent advances in measurement technology offer hope of overcoming these limitations by remote multi-point detections of the magnetic field in the mesosphere, close to the electrojet, providing unprecedented spatial resolution for imaging the equivalent current with Zeeman magnetic field sensors on Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer satellites.

Towards probing Earth's upper mantle with daily magnetic field variations: exploring a physics-based parametrization of the source

Geraldine Zenhausern et al.

Summary: The study focuses on using EM field variations to probe mantle electrical conductivity, examining the impact of different source parametrizations on observatory data through global-to-local transfer functions. Comparing PCA and SH based source representation, better agreement with observatory data is found during magnetically disturbed times and shorter periods.
