Physical Fitness and Chemotherapy Tolerance in Patients with Early-Stage Breast Cancer

Wim G. Groen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between pretreatment physical fitness and achieving an optimal dose intensity of chemotherapy in early-stage breast cancer patients. It was found that patients with higher pretreatment physical fitness were more likely to achieve a sufficient dose intensity. Additionally, participation in a supervised exercise program during chemotherapy appeared to mitigate the negative impact of lower fitness levels on dose intensity.

Cost evaluation of an exercise oncology intervention: The exercise in all chemotherapy trial

Melanie Potiaumpai et al.

Summary: The study found that participation in exercise oncology programs during active chemotherapy treatment may have a positive impact on healthcare costs, especially for patients with advanced stage cancers. However, the differences were not statistically significant, indicating the need for further research to evaluate the potential benefits of exercise oncology programs in reducing healthcare utilization.

Exercise efficacy and prescription during treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: a systematic review

Dominic O'Connor et al.

Summary: A systematic review of 12 studies involving 300 participants found that while exercise can improve outcomes in pancreatic cancer patients, the quality of the studies was variable, with the majority receiving weak ratings. High quality evidence regarding the efficacy and prescription of exercise in pancreatic cancer is still lacking.

The exercise in all chemotherapy trial

Kathryn H. Schmitz et al.

Summary: Embedding an exercise professional into the chemotherapy infusion suite is an acceptable and feasible approach to making exercise standard practice, as shown by the Exercise in All Chemotherapy trial. It has the potential to reach more patients at a lower cost compared to other community programs.

Exercise and health-related fitness predictors of chemotherapy completion in breast cancer patients: pooled analysis of two multicenter trials

Ki-Yong An et al.

Summary: This study found that higher baseline cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength were associated with higher rates of chemotherapy completion in early stage breast cancer patients. Aerobic and/or strength training interventions prior to chemotherapy may improve treatment outcomes.
