The influence of sample preparation on XPS quantification of oxygen-functionalised graphene nanoplatelets

Benjamen P. Reed et al.

Summary: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is commonly used for characterizing the chemistry of graphene-related two-dimensional materials (GR2M). However, the sample preparation method has a significant impact on the quantification results in XPS analysis. An investigation by three laboratories reveals that the preparation of oxygen-functionalized graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) powders affects the measured elemental composition in XPS. Pressing GNP powders onto adhesive tapes, into recesses, or into solid pellets leads to inconsistencies in the XPS quantification. The study recommends pelletizing powder samples of GR2Ms before XPS analysis to improve the repeatability and reproducibility of measurements.

Accessing the robustness of adventitious carbon for charge referencing (correction) purposes in XPS analysis: Insights from a multi-user facility data review

Mark C. Biesinger

Summary: This study assessed the usage and effectiveness of common charge referencing methodologies for insulating samples in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results. It was found that using adventitious carbon (AdC) as a charge reference gave satisfactory and meaningful results in 95% of the cases assessed. Electrical isolation of mixed insulating/semi-conducting/conducting samples was also shown to significantly improve outcomes.

Understanding the bonding mechanisms of organic molecules deposited on graphene for biosensing applications

Elizabeth J. Legge et al.

Summary: Graphene is an ideal material for biosensors due to its large surface area, high electrical conductivity, and high tensile strength. Achieving selectivity through functionalization while maintaining device performance and sensitivity is crucial for successful biosensing applications. By comparing different functionalization methods, this study demonstrates the unexpected removal of covalently bonded functional groups during the modification of graphene, indicating the possibility of reverting to the non-functionalized graphene structure.
