Advances in Cell-Conductive Polymer Biointerfaces and Role of the Plasma Membrane

Anna Mariano et al.

Summary: The plasma membrane is a highly dynamic structure that can stretch, bend, and bud to allow cells to respond and adapt to their environment. Biomimetic strategies based on substrate dimensionality, utilizing conductive polymers, and biofunctionalization through ECM proteins or lipid bilayers have been developed to optimize cell-chip coupling and maximize interfacial interactions.

Bioinspired micro- and nano-structured neural interfaces

Anna Mariano et al.

Summary: The development of a functional nervous system depends on interactions between neurons and cues in the neural extracellular matrix (ECM). ECM topographical cues strongly influence neuronal function and behavior. This article discusses how the blueprint of the brain's ECM organization can inspire the design of biomimetic substrates that enhance neural interfaces and control neuronal behavior. Strategies to mimic cell-ECM and cell-cell interactions are explored, including the use of roughness and 3D scaffolds. Anisotropic features such as grooves and fibers can guide neuronal development, while isotropic topographical cues can reproduce neuron-neuron interactions. Advanced techniques like two-photon polymerization and dynamic interfaces are paving the way for smart biointerfaces in neural tissue engineering and repair strategies.

Conductive Composite Fiber with Optimized Alignment Guides Neural Regeneration under Electrical Stimulation

Jin Zhang et al.

Summary: Conductive composite fibers with varied orientations were prepared, demonstrating the synergistic effect of aligned topography and electrical stimulation on neural regeneration. Introduction of CNTs further enhanced conductivity, promoting oriented growth of neural cells and regeneration of injured nerves. The optimized conductive PCL/CNTs composite fiber showed promising potential for scaffold- and cell-based strategies in neural repair.

Hippocampal Neurons' Alignment on Quartz Grooves and Parylene Cues on Quartz Substrate

Jan Slavik et al.

Summary: The alignment and patterning of neurons play a crucial role in regenerative medicine and artificial neural networks. This study evaluated the alignment of neurons on quartz grooves and parylene cues, finding that chemical alignment is more effective than topographical alignment. Neurons tend to align based on the direction of both quartz grooves and parylene cues, with some following a transversal growth direction.

Anisotropic scaffolds for peripheral nerve and spinal cord regeneration

Wen Xue et al.

Summary: Using tissue engineering as an alternative approach, scaffolds with anisotropic structures play a crucial role in guiding neural outgrowth and reconnection for long-gap peripheral nerve and spinal cord injuries. Recent advances in fabrication techniques, such as anisotropic surface patterns and 3D hydrogel scaffolds, show promising in vitro and in vivo effects in orienting axonal and glial cell growth. Challenges and prospects of anisotropic architectures in tissue engineering are also discussed.
