Improving boiling heat transfer with hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterned flat surface: A molecular dynamics study

Wei Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates six biphilic surfaces with different hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns using molecular dynamics, and observes individual bubble behavior on biphilic surfaces for the first time. Results show that bubble dynamics differ at different wall temperatures, and the shape and volume of bubble can be controlled by designing the hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns. The study also reveals that temperature and density differences above biphilic surfaces promote horizontal heat and mass transfer, facilitating bubble nucleation. Additionally, different pattern designs have varying effects on heat transfer performance.

Visualization of Boiling Heat Transfer on Copper Surface with Different Wettability

Liu Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, a pool boiling visualization experiment platform was constructed to investigate the impact of wettability on nucleate boiling heat transfer. It was found that the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) continues to increase even when the boiling heat transfer approaches the critical heat flux (CHF). The dynamic behaviors of single and multiple bubbles were recorded and found to show good consistency with the proposed heat flux growth rate. The study also revealed that at low heat flux, the hydrophobic surface has better boiling heat transfer efficiency than the hydrophilic surface, while as the heat flux increases, the vapor channel connecting a big bubble and the wall surface plays a crucial role in enhancing the heat transfer.
