Academic social networks metrics: an effective indicator for university performance?

Lukasz Wiechetek et al.

Summary: Social networks have become popular platforms for researchers and scientists to evaluate their impact and assess their strength. This article compares the metrics provided by ResearchGate (RG) with the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and develops alternative university ranks. The research results show that specialized social networks can be used for university assessment, but advanced procedures and indicators are needed for a comprehensive evaluation of scholarly activity.

Discovering temporal scientometric knowledge in COVID-19 scholarly production

Breno Santana Santos et al.

Summary: This study proposes a data-oriented methodology that combines data analysis, machine learning, complex network analysis techniques, and data version control tools to extract implicit knowledge from scientific production databases. The feasibility of this approach is validated through a case study on a COVID-19 manuscripts dataset, revealing the most active countries and most explored themes in each stage of the pandemic.

Big fish and small ponds: why the departmental h-index should not be used to rank universities

O. Mryglod et al.

Summary: This paper reconsiders the size-dependent nature of the group or departmental h-index and highlights the issues with institutional ratings based on this metric. The authors demonstrate the fallacy of using the h-index for collective research-quality assessment and propose a possible remedy for this problem.

Building Knowledge Graphs from Unstructured Texts: Applications and Impact Analyses in Cybersecurity Education

Garima Agrawal et al.

Summary: Knowledge graphs have become popular for concept visualization and contextual information retrieval. However, constructing a knowledge graph without a well-defined ontology or labeled entity-relation dataset is difficult. In the field of cybersecurity education, knowledge graphs can be used to create a student-focused learning environment. This research presents a bottom-up approach to construct knowledge graphs and question-answering models for cybersecurity education. The results show that students found these tools helpful for learning core concepts and using knowledge graphs as a visual reference.

Principled approach to the selection of the embedding dimension of networks

Weiwei Gu et al.

Summary: Network embedding is a machine learning technique that encodes network structure in vector spaces, choosing an appropriate embedding dimension is challenging but important. The proposed principled method can effectively select embedding dimensions in real-world networks.
