3D printing to enable the reuse of marine plastic waste with reduced environmental impacts

Naiara Canado et al.

Summary: The accumulation of marine plastic waste has become an increasingly alarming issue, negatively impacting marine wildlife and habitats. This study proposes the use of circular economy principles to reduce nonbiodegradable marine litter by utilizing marine plastic waste as a source material for 3D printing in the marine industry. The environmental impacts of different production processes and end-of-life alternatives are assessed using life cycle assessment (LCA) methods. The results show that utilizing marine plastic waste is environmentally preferred compared to using bio-based materials, with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) proving to be a promising biodegradable polymer. Composting is identified as a suitable end-of-life option, as it allows the production of renewable energy from biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted during degradation.
