Use of GIS and BIM tools in determining the life cycle impact of urban systems. Case study: Residential buildings which apply the Eco-Efficiency Matrix in the city of Quito, Ecuador

Nelly Revelo Caceres et al.

Summary: Among the various effects of human activity on the environment, construction is one of the main contributors to CO2 emissions and environmental impact. This study used LCA, BIM, and GIS to analyze the impact of high-rise buildings on urban environments and found that a concentrated city model in height has less environmental impact compared to uncontrolled urban expansion.

Towards Rural Resilience: Assessing Future Spatial Urban Expansion and Population Growth in Quito as a Measure of Resilience

Rene Ulloa-Espindola et al.

Summary: In the last two decades, the urban and rural areas of the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ) have undergone aggressive urbanization, which often disregards the local government's land use plans. This is compounded by poor land use planning in an uncontrolled and disorderly manner, as well as the rapid growth of rural areas. This article utilizes geographic artificial intelligence techniques to analyze the projected changes in urban settlements and buildings in rural areas over the next 50 years. It also constructs a composite index of resilience (CIR) for each rural parish of the DMQ and determines its change based on projections of urban expansion and population growth.
