Identification of nonpoint source pollution source/sink in a typical watershed of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, China: A case study of the Qijiang River

Shaojun Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, the Qijiang River Basin in the Three Gorges Reservoir area was used to identify the source/sink pattern of nonpoint source pollution (NPSP). The results showed that the source landscape mainly distributed in the northern hilly area, while the sink landscape mainly concentrated in the southern mountain area. There was a significant correlation between soil erosion and the landscape index, and a certain relationship between water quality and the landscape index.

Evaluating the risks of spatial and temporal changes in nonpoint source pollution in a Chinese river basin

Baolin Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-factor NPS risk assessment model NSPRI based on the source-sink landscape theory was proposed and applied in Muzhuhe River Basin, Shandong, China. The results showed that the method could effectively assess spatial and temporal variations in the risks from nitrogen and phosphorus losses, providing scientific support for NPS pollution control from the perspective of source-sink landscape theory.

Soil erosion spatio-temporal exploration and Geodetection of driving factors using InVEST-sediment delivery ratio and Geodetector models in Dongsheng, China

Nametso Matomela et al.

Summary: Assessing soil erosion processes and accurately identifying erosion drivers are essential for effective control and conservation strategies. In this study, a new approach integrating the SDR of the InVEST and Geodetector models was introduced to explore the spatio-temporal variability of erosion and investigate key drivers. The results showed a significant increase in soil loss, particularly in cropland areas. The Geodetector model revealed that vegetation, slope, precipitation, and aspect were the key variables influencing erosion. This approach can be applied to other regions with severe soil erosion.

Landscape configuration mediates hydrology and nonpoint source pollution under climate change and agricultural expansion

Le Li et al.

Summary: This study developed an integrated approach to identify the effects of climate and landscape changes on runoff and nitrate loading in watersheds in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of China. It found that landscape pattern changes primarily affected surface runoff and nitrate load, while baseflow and water yield were mainly influenced by precipitation change. The findings highlight the importance of considering landscape configuration and seasonal climatic characteristics in ecological restoration strategies for effective control of nitrate loss.

Spatial variation impact of landscape patterns and land use on water quality across an urbanized watershed in Bentong, Malaysia

Zakariya Nafi' Shehab et al.

Summary: The research demonstrated that water quality is influenced by landscape configuration and land cover proportions, especially urban and agricultural lands. Maintaining the integrity of tropical forests is crucial for preserving clean water. Furthermore, excessive use of unused land, controlling land use compactness, and sustaining a prevalent distribution of unfragmented forests are key factors in improving water quality and reducing pollutant release.

Using soil erosion to locate nonpoint source pollution risks in coastal zones: A case study in the Yellow River Delta, China

Youxiao Wang et al.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of soil erosion on nonpoint source pollution, establishing a coastal NSP risk calculation method. Findings showed that soil erodibility levels and NSP risks increased from west to east, with vegetation cover and rainfall erosivity contributing the most to NSP risks.
