Numerical Research on Migration Law of Typical Chlorinated Organic Matter in Shallow Groundwater of Yangtze Delta Region

Jiang Zhou et al.

Summary: This research aimed to predict and quantify the migration process of contaminants in a microconfined aquifer by conducting a groundwater contamination investigation in an abandoned chemical plant in the Jiangsu Province of China. The results illustrate that the plume range of chloroform diffuses with water flow, but, because of its slow diffusion rate and inability to degrade naturally, the concentration of the contaminant has remained several times higher than the safety standard for a long time. Sensitivity analysis shows that groundwater contamination in the Yangtze delta region is greatly affected by precipitation recharge and hydraulic conductivity.

Migration of DNAPL in Saturated Porous Media: Validation of High-Resolution Shock-Capturing Numerical Simulations through a Sandbox Experiment

Alessandra Feo et al.

Summary: This paper compares laboratory-scale experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the migration of a DNAPL in a saturated porous medium. The results show good agreement between the simulations and experiments, and demonstrate the capability of CactusHydro for accurately tracking the evolution of the contaminant plume and evaluating the environmental impacts of DNAPL leaks.

Investigating the migration of immiscible contaminant fluid flow in homogeneous and heterogeneous aquifers with high-precision numerical simulations

Alessandra Feo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical modeling approach for the migration of three-phase immiscible fluid flow in variably saturated zones. The simulation results show that using a high-resolution shock-capturing method allows for an accurate description of the contaminant migration and the evolution of the contaminant front in these zones.

Remediation of the Alluvial Aquifer of the Sardas Landfill (Sabinanigo, Huesca) by Surfactant Application

Joaquin Guadano et al.

Summary: The Sardas landfill in Sabinanigo Huesca is contaminated with Dense Non-Aqueous Liquid Phases (DNAPLs) composed of chlorinated organic compounds (COCs). A biodegradable non-ionic surfactant was injected into the landfill to treat the contamination, resulting in a significant reduction of COCs in groundwater.

River-Groundwater Interaction and Recharge Effects on Microplastics Contamination of Groundwater in Confined Alluvial Aquifers

Edoardo Severini et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop an efficient and cost-effective method to extract and evaluate microplastics in a sedimentary aquifer based on the hydrogeological characteristics of the area. The findings show that microplastics in groundwater have higher circularity and Feret diameter compared to those in surface waters, indicating that their shape plays a more significant role in transport in porous aquifers. Additionally, aquifer recharge does not alter the characteristics of microplastics in groundwater.

High-resolution shock-capturing numerical simulations of three-phase immiscible fluids from the unsaturated to the saturated zone

Alessandra Feo et al.

Summary: The study introduces a high-resolution numerical model for simulating three-phase immiscible fluid flow in porous aquifers. It utilizes coupled mass equations to study the dynamics of fluid flow and employs shock-capturing method to handle sharp fronts accurately. The main numerical solution approach is based on explicit evolution of discretized variables in space.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Natural Attenuation at a Contaminated Site

Andrea Zanini et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the natural attenuation of chlorinated hydrocarbons as remediation action in a contaminated site downtown the city of Parma (Italy), using a combination of new investigation methods. The results revealed contamination of perchloroethylene in a large part of the city and underneath a kindergarten, without significant natural attenuation detected. The innovative phytoscreening technique was applied to assess chlorinated hydrocarbons at the ground level, enhancing knowledge of groundwater flow and contamination in Parma.

Impact of Pumping Rate on Contaminant Transport in Groundwater-A Numerical Study

Hossein Ahmadi et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional numerical model was developed to simulate the impact of pumping rate on well water quality. The modeling results showed that choosing an optimum range for the pumping rate can increase contaminant travel time and reduce aquifer vulnerability. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of pumping rate variations on pollution migration through saturated porous media.
