A comparative life cycle assessment of anaerobic mono- and co-digestion of livestock manure in Bangladesh

Samira Hossain et al.

Summary: Proper management of biogenic residues, particularly livestock manure and food waste, is a major challenge for Bangladesh. Co-digestion of livestock manure and food waste shows potential benefits in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental burdens, but it also requires appropriate post-treatment to address increased acidification potential and malodor air emissions.

Developing a biogas centralised circular bioeconomy using agricultural residues-Challenges and opportunities

Lu Feng et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a versatile technology that can produce biofuels, biochemicals, and fertilizer as part of the circular bioeconomy. Agricultural residues, such as animal slurry, straw, and grass silage, are valuable resources with significant potential to increase biogas and methane yields. However, it is crucial to assess the long-term impacts and the potential accumulation of unwanted substances. This comprehensive literature review analyzes the benefits and environmental impacts of using agricultural residues for AD and highlights potential risks and challenges in developing a biogas-centered circular bioeconomy.

Linking bioenergy production by agricultural residues to sustainable development goals: Prospects by 2030 in China

Junnian Song et al.

Summary: Large-scale bioenergy production using agricultural residues has potential impacts on energy, environment, economy and society. This study quantifies and analyzes these impacts in 31 Chinese regions by 2030. Results show significant potential for net energy output and net profit, as well as positive effects on environmental impacts, although there are trade-offs in certain areas. Regional sustainability score depends on the availability of agricultural residues, with some regions benefiting more than others. The findings can guide decision-makers in promoting agricultural bio-energy development for regional sustainability.

Exploring Farm Anaerobic Digester Economic Viability in a Time of Policy Change in the UK

Angela Bywater et al.

Summary: The UK has a unique opportunity to create an exemplar in small-scale farm anaerobic digesters for renewable electricity and heat. The economic viability of farm-based biogas production was analyzed, taking into account various factors such as support levels, energy prices, capital cost, internal rate of return (IRR), and digestate value. The study showed that the technology approaches subsidy-free viability, but wider environmental and societal benefits must be explicitly valued for widespread adoption.
