Regional Adaptability of Global and Regional Hydrological Forecast System

Han Wang et al.

Summary: This paper aims to improve flood forecasting by comparing the simulation results of a global hydrological forecast system and a regional system, and testing their influence on input data. The results showed that the global system had poorer simulation results due to lower input data quality. However, the global system had higher forecast quality in terms of high flow and longer lead times. Quantile mapping was effective in eliminating errors in input data, model, and initialization.

Monitoring of Multi-Aspect Drought Severity and Socio-Economic Status in the Semi-Arid Regions of Eastern Tamil Nadu, India

Venkatesh Ravichandran et al.

Summary: A framework was established to monitor drought in the semi-arid regions of eastern Tamil Nadu, India, from 2014 to 2018 using various drought indices. The study found negative precipitation anomalies, vegetative stress, and significant losses in the farming sector due to meteorological and agricultural droughts. The most extreme drought impacts were observed in the eastern region, followed by the northern and southern regions. The socio-economic vulnerability of the eastern region, characterized by a higher population and household density, hampers its ability to overcome droughts.

Drought in South Asia: A Review of Drought Assessment and Prediction in South Asian Countries

Sewwandhi S. K. Chandrasekara et al.

Summary: South Asian countries have been experiencing frequent drought incidents recently. Scientific studies have focused on exploring drought, quantifying and monitoring it using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) in most countries. However, there is a lack of drought quantification studies in Bhutan and the Maldives, and future research is needed to generate a combined drought severity map for the region. Additionally, prediction and projection of drought, as well as the teleconnection between drought and large-scale atmospheric circulations in South Asia, require further study.

Summary: Building on almost 10 years of expertise and operational application of the Combined Drought Indicator (CDI), this paper proposes a revised version of the index to improve its performance for events that are currently not reliably represented. The proposed modifications, including the use of previously occurring CDI values and the introduction of temporary classes, have been tested and shown to reliably reproduce the evolution of major droughts in Europe over the past 20 years, outperforming the current version of the indicator. The revised CDI does not require supplementary input datasets, making it suitable for operational implementation within the EDO drought monitoring system.
