Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources in the Danube River Basin: A Hydrological Modelling Study Using EURO-CORDEX Climate Scenarios

Elisabeth Probst et al.

Summary: Climate change affects the hydrological cycle of river basins, leading to changes in temperature, precipitation, soil water content, and runoff dynamics. Using the hydrological model PROMET and climate model projections, this study investigated the impacts of climate change on the Danube River Basin. The results show that climate change will result in increasing temperature, wetter winters in the Upper Danube, drier summers in the Lower Danube, and shifts in discharge seasonality.

Revealing Causal Factors Influencing Sustainable and Safe Navigation in Central Europe

Andrea Maternova et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of hazards and risks in inland waterway transport, based on the data collected from real accidents on the Danube River. The findings highlight the recurring hazards primarily caused by human behavior. The study can be used to develop preventive measures for ensuring the safety of inland navigation.

Towards a Better Understanding of Motivation and Constraints for Domestic Geotourists: The Case of the Middle and Lower Danube Region in Serbia

Nemanja Tomic et al.

Summary: The main motivation among domestic geotourists in Serbia is acquiring new knowledge, while structural constraints are the main demotivator. The study results show that women are more motivated by the factor related to acquiring new knowledge than men, and individuals with master's or doctoral degrees consider the factor related to friends less important.

How Can We Identify Active, Former, and Potential Floodplains? Methods and Lessons Learned from the Danube River

Markus Eder et al.

Summary: This paper presents methods to identify active, former, and potential floodplains, and their application to the Danube River. The extent of Danube floodplains has been reduced by around 79%. The share of active and potential floodplains in relation to former floodplains ranges between 5% and 49%.

Sustainable Development Scenarios in the Danube Delta-A Pilot Methodology for Decision Makers

Luminita Lazar et al.

Summary: A comprehensive method was developed in this study to assist decision makers in determining the sustainable development strategy of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, involving consultation with local and higher-level stakeholders and identification of key social, economic, and environmental issues. Recommended policies include a scenario combining moderate intensification of aquaculture, ecological agriculture, and slow tourism to reduce impact on water quality.

Stochastic investigation of daily air temperature extremes from a global ground station network

Konstantinos-Georgios Glynis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stochastic behavior of near-surface air temperature using the newly developed estimation tool of Knowable (K-)moments. Results suggest that average and minimum temperatures tend to increase, while overall the maximum temperature is slightly decreasing. The study highlights the importance of understanding temperature variability and extremes in the context of global warming and anthropogenic climate change discussions.

A Global-Scale Investigation of Stochastic Similarities in Marginal Distribution and Dependence Structure of Key Hydrological-Cycle Processes

Panayiotis Dimitriadis et al.

Summary: This study utilized an extensive collection of data from worldwide stations to seek stochastic analogies in key processes related to the hydrological cycle. It found stochastic similarities among the examined processes and traced similarities to turbulence-related lab recordings. These results contribute to the development of a universal stochastic view of the hydrological cycle.
