Role of morphology and chemical composition of PM for particle deposition in human respiratory system: A case study over megacity-Delhi

Sadaf Fatima et al.

Summary: The morphology and chemical composition of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) determine its deposition and inhalation fate. The study of PM5 in Delhi showed that non-spherical particles dominate, followed by spherical ones, and are rich in elements that have potential health effects. Analysis of 2650 individual particles revealed that non-spherical and fine-size particles are dominant in Delhi. The study also found that aspect ratio (AR) is an important input parameter for health models to obtain realistic and unbiased health data.

Summary: This study identifies the types of ultra-fine air pollutants present in the local atmosphere of Budapest using satellite images and physical sample collection. The results reveal the presence of ultra-fine particles containing elements harmful to human health. The study also highlights the importance of reducing pollutants for a better quality of life in the city.

Sources, chemical components, and toxicological responses of size segregated urban air PM samples in high air pollution season in Guangzhou, China

Mo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sources and associations between chemical components and toxicity of PM during high air pollution season in Guangzhou. It was found that smaller-diameter PM had higher levels of water-soluble ions and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), while larger-diameter PM had more metallic elements. Traffic exhaust, soil dust, and biomass burning/petrochemical were identified as the main sources of PAHs, metals, and ions, respectively. Exposure to PM10-2.5 resulted in significant reduction in cell mitochondrial activity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response, while PM1-0.2 exposure caused DNA damage, increase in Sub G1/G0 population, and impaired cell membrane integrity.

Identification of sites with elevated PM levels along an urban cycle path using a mobile platform and the analysis of 48 particle bound PAH

Hanna E. Fuchte et al.

Summary: This study provides insights into the everyday exposure scenarios of urban commuters to aerosol particles and their associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. By combining high-resolution particle measurements and chemical analysis, the study identifies locations with elevated levels of particulate matter concentrations and recommends the measurement of a wider range of PAH for future studies.

Size-fractionated PM-bound PAHs in urban and rural atmospheres of northern Thailand for respiratory health risk assessment*

Wittawat Insian et al.

Summary: During the smoke haze season, higher concentrations of particles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were found in rural areas compared to urban areas, with the highest PAH concentrations in the finest particles. Conversely, during the non-smoke haze season, urban areas had higher concentrations due to traffic emissions.

Valorization of a hazardous waste with 3D-printing: Combination of kaolin clay and electric arc furnace dust from the steel making industry

Edisson Ordonez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using electric arc furnace steel dust (EAFD) waste and kaolin-based clay as materials for 3D printing. The results show that EAFD can be stabilized and used to reduce environmental pollution. By controlling the water to clay ratio and waste content, the fabricated samples exhibit good performance after sintering treatment.

Summary: The study on PM10 and PM2.5 in four urban sites along the Silk Road in Northwest China found relatively homogeneous spatial distribution and predominant sources of water-soluble inorganic ions and mineral dust. Dust and secondary inorganic aerosols were identified as the main contributors, with higher contributions from dust and factory combustion emission sources compared to other regions of China.
