A Novel NODE Approach Combined with LSTM for Short-Term Electricity Load Forecasting

Songtao Huang et al.

Summary: Electricity load forecasting has become increasingly important with the growing effectiveness of deep learning methods. Improving the accuracy of electricity load forecasting is crucial for public resources management departments. Traditional neural network methods such as LSTM and BiLSTM have been widely used, but they lack sensitivity to dynamic inputs and fail to capture internal nonperiodic patterns. In this paper, a novel neural ordinary differential equation (NODE) method is applied, which shows improved accuracy in electricity load forecasting compared to models without NODE.

The impact of climate change on global energy use

Hongliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a global analysis of the link between annual total energy use and temperature. Results show that rich and poor countries exhibit differential response functions to temperature changes for annual total energy use. Unmitigated climate change is projected to increase global total energy use by 24.0% on average. The impacts of future global warming on total energy use vary spatially, with low-income countries facing significant increases and cooler countries experiencing reductions. Policy-makers need to consider socioeconomic factors and climate uncertainty when projecting future climate change impacts on global energy use.

Automated Estimation of Construction Equipment Emission Using Inertial Sensors and Machine Learning Models

Farid Shahnavaz et al.

Summary: The construction industry is a major producer of greenhouse gases, making it important to quantify air pollution levels during construction projects. Heavy equipment contributes significantly to air pollution during construction, and efficient operation and management can reduce a project's carbon footprint and environmental harm. This study developed a machine learning framework that uses accelerometer and gyroscope sensors to predict emissions from heavy construction equipment. Data was collected using a portable emission measurement system and inertial sensors, and different machine learning algorithms were developed and compared. The results showed that the Random Forest model was the best algorithm for predicting emission levels from inertial sensor data.

European Forest Governance: Status Quo and Optimising Options with Regard to the Paris Climate Target

Jessica Stubenrauch et al.

Summary: This article assesses and develops policy instruments for forest governance in the EU. The study finds that the potential benefits of afforestation and reforestation for climate mitigation are overestimated, and only biodiverse and resilient forests can function as a long-term carbon sink. Additionally, the existing EU law fails to comply with climate and biodiversity targets. Quantity governance systems for key drivers of deforestation, such as livestock farming and fossil fuels, show more promise than regulatory and subsidy-based governance. Selected aspects of regulatory and subsidy law can complement these systems.
