Progress in research on site-specific nutrient management for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa

P. Chivenge et al.

Summary: Increasing fertilizer access and use is crucial for improving crop production and food security in sub-Saharan Africa. The site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) approach, initially developed for rice in Asia, has been successfully applied to rice, maize, and cassava cropping systems in SSA, leading to increased yield, profitability, and nutrient use efficiency. Further research and evaluation are needed to quantify the broader benefits of SSNM in diverse farming systems and environments.

Agricultural water management practices to improve the climate resilience of irrigated agriculture in India

Alok K. Sikka et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of addressing climate change and how science-based agricultural water management can reduce unsustainable water use and increase agricultural resilience. It presents practices to enhance water resilience, increase yields, and reduce emissions, and proposes two approaches to prioritize these practices. The paper also discusses the way forward in mainstreaming context-specific climate-smart agricultural water management interventions.

Management Strategies to Mitigate N2O Emissions in Agriculture

Muhammad Umair Hassan et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the role of agricultural practices in mitigating N2O emissions and finds that interventions such as adjusting N supply, tillage, irrigation, and using amendments can effectively reduce N2O emissions. Adjusting N supply is the most direct approach, but it is also advisable to adjust other crop management practices to adhere to principles of good agricultural practices.

Sustainable Agro-Food Systems for Addressing Climate Change and Food Security

Akila Wijerathna-Yapa et al.

Summary: Despite the Green Revolution's success in matching world food production with population growth, the UN's State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 Report reveals that hunger has increased, affecting 828 million people, with 29.3% of the global population being food insecure and 22% of children under five suffering from stunted growth. Poor diets and nutrient deficiencies have led to various diet-related non-communicable diseases. Furthermore, current agricultural systems have significant environmental and climate impacts. Climate change, pandemics, and conflicts also weaken food systems, aggravating global food insecurity. This review highlights the importance of implementing sustainable agricultural practices and policies to achieve food security and nutrition goals in the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Farmers' adaptation to climate-smart agriculture (CSA) in NW Turkey

Bengu Everest

Summary: The study focuses on farmers' adaptation to climate change through Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and the adoption of CSA categories. Results show high application potential of CSA categories among farmers, with factors influencing decisions being education, participation in agricultural meetings, land size, and agricultural income. These factors may guide policymakers in taking measures against climate change.

Climate change impacts on soil salinity in agricultural areas

Dennis L. Corwin

Summary: Changes in climate patterns are negatively impacting agriculture, especially in arid regions. Proximal/remote sensors are useful in assessing the impact of climate change on soil salinity across scales. Factors such as salt-water intrusion, shallow water tables, and degraded water reuse will lead to increased soil salinity. There is a need for infrastructure and protocols to monitor soil salinity across multiple scales.

Crop nutrient management using Nutrient Expert improves yield, increases farmers' income and reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Tek B. Sapkota et al.

Summary: The Nutrient Expert (NE) tool can reduce the global warming potential in rice and wheat crops, increasing crop yield and farm income for over 80% of participating farmers. The effectiveness of NE is influenced by crop type, agro-ecology, soil properties, and farmers' current fertilization practices. Adoption of NE-based fertilizer recommendation practice in all rice and wheat acreage in India could lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and increased production.

Improving nitrogen use efficiency using precision nitrogen management in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Varinderpal-Singh et al.

Summary: The study found that coating wheat seeds with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve mycorrhization but does not have a significant impact on nitrogen assimilation. Precision nitrogen management strategies such as leaf color chart, chlorophyll meter, and optical sensors can effectively increase wheat yield while improving nitrogen use efficiency and reducing nitrogen fertilizer application.

Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Agriculture, with Particular Emphasis on Emissions from Energy Used

Piotr Golasa et al.

Summary: The relationship between agriculture and climate change is complex, with agriculture being both heavily impacted by climate change and a major emitter of greenhouse gases. A study based on FADN data aimed to analyze greenhouse gas emissions in farms and identify areas for emission reduction, highlighting livestock production as a significant source of emissions compared to energy production. Efforts to reduce emissions should focus on livestock production rather than energy use, except for certain types of farms such as horticultural ones where energy emissions are dominant.

Towards Monitoring Waterlogging with Remote Sensing for Sustainable Irrigated Agriculture

Nadja den Besten et al.

Summary: Waterlogging is becoming a critical issue in irrigated agriculture, negatively affecting crop productivity. Monitoring and preventing waterlogging through improved evaporation models is crucial. Future research should focus on combining remote sensing and ancillary data to monitor waterlogging, as well as utilizing drainage parameters derived from high spatial resolution DEMs.
