Socioeconomic geography of climate change views in Europe

Mikko Weckroth et al.

Summary: This study examines differences in climate change attitudes between urban and rural areas, as well as regions with varying population growth rates in Europe. It finds that socioeconomic factors and education levels significantly impact climate change attitudes and energy-saving behavior, with lower income groups showing less environmental concern but higher engagement in energy-saving activities. The results highlight the need to consider socioeconomic disadvantage and spatial marginalization when revising climate change and environmental policies in the EU.

Climate change induced human displacement in Bangladesh: Implications on the livelihood of displaced riverine island dwellers and their adaptation strategies

Babul Hossain et al.

Summary: In Bangladesh, climate change and its associated natural disasters have led to the displacement of many people in riverine island areas. This study examines the impact of climate change on the lives and livelihoods of internally displaced people, as well as the barriers to adaptation strategies. The findings indicate that frequent flooding, riverbank erosion, and crop loss are the main reasons for relocation, and displaced individuals have identified increasing temperatures and disease outbreaks as indicators of climate change. The study also reveals that almost all households face severe livelihood issues, and while displaced people have implemented adaptation strategies, challenges such as fragile housing and lack of resources hinder their sustainability. The study suggests that the government and organizations should work together to address the livelihood complications of internally displaced people through a dynamic resettlement project.

CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS IN COASTAL BANGLADESH: MIGRATION, GENDER AND ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE

Saleh Ahmed et al.

Summary: The paper examines how farming women in rural coastal areas of Bangladesh are more socially vulnerable than men, particularly due to the outmigration of male household members. An intersectional approach further explains how religio-cultural norms and prohibitions can contribute to increased vulnerability for women from the ethno-religious majority compared to minority women.
