Exploring selected pathways to low and zero CO2 emissions in China's iron and steel industry and their impacts on resources and energy

Shaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study that used the MESSAGEix-China iron and steel model to explore pathways for achieving zero CO2 emissions in China's iron and steel industry. The study found that rapid adoption of scrap-based Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)-EAFs steel-making technologies can significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 2060. However, carbon sink or negative emission technologies will still be needed to achieve carbon neutrality. The study also highlights the varying impacts of different technologies on material and energy consumption.

Soft sensor of bath temperature in an electric arc furnace based on a data-driven Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model

Aljaz Blazic et al.

Summary: Electric arc furnaces are used for recycling steel scrap, and the tapping temperature is an important variable in this process. A novel approach using a fuzzy model soft sensor for continuous estimation of EAF bath temperature has been proposed in this study, aiming to reduce measurement frequency and energy losses, and improve efficiency.

Application and Evaluation of Mathematical Models for Prediction of the Electric Energy Demand Using Plant Data of Five Industrial-Size EAFs

Alexander Reimann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the applicability of three different statistical modeling approaches for predicting the electric energy demand of EAF, using more than 21,000 heats from five industrial-size EAFs. The results show that Gaussian process regression (GPR) offers the best overall accuracy, but the benefit of applying nonlinear models varies between the investigated furnaces. Possible reasons for the inconsistent performance of the methods are discussed.
