Comparison of the Degradation Performance of Seven Different Choline Chloride-Based DES Systems on Alkaline Lignin

Penghui Li et al.

Summary: In this study, lignin was degraded using deep eutectic solvent (DES), and it was found that acidic DES was more effective in depolymerizing alkaline lignin. The degradation process was characterized using NMR hydrogen spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and GPC.

Data-Centric Development of Lignin Structure-Solubility Relationships in Deep Eutectic Solvents Using Molecular Simulations

Zeynep Sumer et al.

Summary: In this study, we used classical molecular dynamics simulations and regression models to investigate the interactions between lignin model compounds and deep eutectic solvents-water systems, and predicted the solubilities of representative lignin oligomers. The results showed that the most important solubility descriptors are system temperature, solute hydrophilicity, and metrics quantifying hydrogen bonding. Maximizing the interactions between molecules led to higher solubilities. The regression model derived from the model compounds successfully predicted the solubility of larger lignin compounds, providing new insights into lignin solubilization mechanisms.

Switchable (pH driven) aqueous two-phase systems formed by deep eutectic solvents as integrated platforms for production-separation 5-HMF

Xiaojie Yu et al.

Summary: Switchable DES-salt-based ATPS were used as integrated platforms for the production-separation processes, inducing dynamic phase shifts through pH adjustment. The effects of DES species, K3C6H5O7 concentration, and pH on the distribution of 5-HMF and fructose were investigated, leading to optimal DES-ATPS system compositions and demonstrating good catalytic efficiency and extraction rates.

Mechanism of Deep Eutectic Solvent Delignification: Insights from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Huanfei Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a pretreatment method for a lignin-carbohydrate complex model in choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents was proposed, where breaking of beta-O-4 ether and glycosidic bonds was observed at an optimal temperature of 373 K. The presence of free protons in the deep eutectic solvents played a crucial role in biomass delignification, with acidic hydrogen bonding donors showing high lignin removal rates. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that choline chloride/glycerol with a slightly weaker hydrogen bonding network exhibited better binding and solubilization capabilities for product molecules.

In Competition for Water: Hydrated Choline Chloride:Urea vs Choline Acetate:Urea Deep Eutectic Solvents

Maria Enrica Di Pietro et al.

Summary: The study found that hydration affects the strength and distribution of hydrogen bonds, leading to changes in the structure of different deep eutectic solvents. Choline acetate solvents undergo a breakage of DES-DES interactions at low water concentrations, while Choline chloride:urea maintains its structure.
