Analyzing Physical-Mechanical and Hydrophysical Properties of Sandy Soils Exposed to Long-Term Hydrocarbon Contamination

Ivan Lange et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the issue of sandy soil contamination by oil hydrocarbons. The laboratory procedures used involve grain-size measurements and evaluation of physical-mechanical and hydrophysical properties. The results show that contaminated sand samples have a hydrocarbon film covering the surface of mineral particles, leading to the formation of micro- and macroaggregates. Additionally, contaminated sandy soils exhibit lower densities, higher permeabilities, and water yields compared to conditionally pure samples. Mechanical testing indicates an increase in the angle of internal friction and a decrease in specific adhesion for contaminated sands.

Biochar Production, Modification, and Its Uses in Soil Remediation: A Review

Nicholas Blenis et al.

Summary: Soil remediation is the process of removing or reducing contaminants from soil, particularly in agriculture. Traditional methods, such as chemical treatments and excavation, are costly and time-consuming. This review highlights the potential of biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from biomass burning, as an effective and environmentally friendly approach to soil remediation. Biochar has unique physical and chemical properties, such as high cation exchange capacity and large surface area, and can host naturally occurring microbes or be inoculated with specific ones for contaminant breakdown. By binding and promoting the degradation of contaminants, biochar can reduce their availability to the surrounding environment. This review emphasizes the need for further research and optimization of biochar production to make it a more cost-effective and consistent method for soil remediation.

Mangottiri Vasudevan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the avenues to enhance the production of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) from different types of wastewater by optimizing the substrate-microbe combination and process control techniques. It confirms that waste activated sludge (WAS) is a promising substrate for PHB production, and nutrients recovery can be obtained through proper nutrient balancing. The study also highlights the scope of end-of-life applications for bioplastics and their sustainable economic feasibility.

Role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria in boosting the phytoremediation of stressed soils: Opportunities, challenges, and prospects

Poonam Bhanse et al.

Summary: Soil is a vital natural resource that supports plant growth and provides habitat for microorganisms. Urbanization, industrialization, and the use of synthetic fertilizers have led to changes in soil properties, productivity, and contamination/stress. Microbial-assisted phytoremediation, utilizing soil microbes to enhance plant tolerance to stress and improve phytoremediation capacity, is an economical and greener approach. This review critically explores the mechanisms of microbial-assisted phytoremediation and highlights the role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in enhancing plant growth and phytoremediation capacity. Advanced tools and techniques for characterizing soil microbial communities and their significance in boosting phytoremediation of stressed soils are also discussed.

J. A. Saez et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of composting and vermicomposting on the potential toxicity of sediments derived from long-term stored olive mill wastewater (OMW). Results showed that composting assisted with earthworms was more effective in reducing the ecotoxicity of OMWS, especially during the maturation stage. Vermicomposting was also effective in reducing OMWS salinity, but a pre-composting process was necessary to provide suitable conditions for earthworms.
