Rafael Robayo-Salazar et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the advantages and opportunities of additive manufacturing in the construction sector, focusing on the design methodology and required properties of cementitious material mixes suitable for 3D printing. It examines traditional materials based on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and non-conventional ones such as alkali-activated materials (geopolymers). While additive manufacturing has found interesting projects in the United States, Europe, and Asia, its adoption is still in the experimental phase in Latin America. However, promising developments and research in countries like Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, and Peru suggest that 3D printing will become an industrial reality in the near future. This paper presents the main challenges and opportunities in implementing additive manufacturing.

Monitoring the setting process of alkali-activated slag-fly ash cements with ultrasonic P-wave velocity

Siva Uppalapati et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate on the setting process of sodium silicate-activated slag-fly ash cements. The results show that the partial substitution of activators has no noticeable effect on the initial setting time, but significantly increases the final setting time. The condensation reaction between aluminosilicate units near the particle surface is likely responsible for setting, and a specific ultrasonic velocity range can be used to estimate the setting times of the studied cements.
