Silver contamination and its toxicity and risk management in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

Lokesh P. Padhye et al.

Summary: Silver is a rare and precious metal found in minerals and released into the environment through weathering and mining activities. It also enters the environment through manufacturing and use of silver compounds. Silver nanoparticles have become a significant source of anthropogenic silver in the environment. Most silver in soil and water is sorbed to particles and precipitated as various compounds. Humans and animals can be exposed to silver through inhalation and consumption of contaminated food and water. Remediation of silver-contaminated soil and water can be achieved through immobilization and mobilization processes. This review provides an overview of the sources, geochemistry, health hazards, remediation practices, and regulatory mandates of silver contamination in complex environmental settings, and discusses knowledge gaps and research priorities.

Evaluating the metal recovery potential of coal fly ash based on sequential extraction and machine learning

Mengting Wu et al.

Summary: Given the depletion of metal resources and potential leaching of toxic elements, it is crucial to recover metals from solid waste for sustainable development. This study constructed hybrid models using gradient boosting decision trees and particle swarm optimization algorithms and proposed a new evaluation index for metal recovery potential. The results showed that the model with more elemental properties accurately predicted metal fractions in coal fly ash, and the DAT sample had the highest recovery potential. The innovative evaluation strategy provides an important reference for maximizing metal recovery from coal fly ash.

Source-oriented probabilistic health risk assessment of soil potentially toxic elements in a typical mining city

Bei Yuan et al.

Summary: This study conducted a case study in Daye City, China to explore the pollution characteristics, potential sources, and human health risks of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils. Indices including pollution factor (PF), pollution load index (PLI), and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) were used to assess PTE pollution. The study found that Cd had the highest value among the detected PTEs and 82.93% of the sampling sites had moderate pollution levels, with Cd having the highest mean Igeo value (2.30). Four potential sources were determined, including natural sources, industrial activities, mineral exploitation and smelting, and Cu-related mining and smelting activities. The probabilistic health risk assessment showed negligible non-carcinogenic risks for populations. Overall, this study provides scientific information for environmental managers to manage soil PTE pollution through the effective management of anthropogenic sources.

The leaching behaviors of lead, zinc, and sulfate in pyrite ash contaminated soil: mineralogical assessments and environmental implications

Yikai Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of soil mineralogy in the release of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) was investigated, and a modeling approach was used to predict the leaching behavior. The results showed that the lowest leached concentrations of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) occurred at pH values ranging from 8.0 to 10.0. Anglesite, cerussite, and hydrocerussite were found to control Pb retention, while zinc carbonates and hydroxides were responsible for Zn retention. The release of sulfate increased with pH values, governed by the equilibrium of jarosite, gypsum, and anglesite. The combination of experimental and modeling approaches provided valuable insights into PTEs' release and retention.
