Making waves: Peace Boat Japan as a model of sustainable peace through tourism

Summary: The linking of peace to tourism raises key questions about whether tourism is a generator of peace or simply its beneficiary, whether tourism can be a social force or is just an industry, and what pedagogical principles can be utilized to promote learning for peace. Through a case study of Peace Boat, it is evident that tourism can contribute to global peace and solidarity by harnessing the power of peace encounters and adopting a more reflexive approach towards reclaiming tourism in the interests of sustainability, human rights, justice, and peace.
