Geotechnical properties of oil-polluted soil: a review

Hamed Haghsheno et al.

Summary: This review paper focuses on the impacts of oil pollution on soil geotechnical properties. The addition of oil pollution in coarse-grained soils significantly reduces particle surface roughness, while it results in flocculation and secondary aggregation of clay particles in fine-grained soils, leading to less aggregated and loose packing in the soil matrix, and the formation of isometric and fissure-like pores. The geotechnical properties of oil-polluted soils are mostly determined by the physicochemical and physical interactions between the soil and contaminant. The degree of property alteration is influenced by soil type and features, as well as the quantity, type, and chemical composition of oil pollutants.

Recent progress on in-situ chemical oxidation for the remediation of petroleum contaminated soil and groundwater

Kun-Hao Wei et al.

Summary: This review assesses the applications and recent advances of three commonly used oxidants in the remediation of soil and groundwater, and analyzes the removal efficiencies reported in research articles related to petroleum-contaminated soil and groundwater. The study finds that the remediation efficiency of the oxidants is higher for groundwater compared to soil. Furthermore, combining multiple techniques can increase the overall efficiency of ISCO and help solve the rebound problem.

Thermal desorption treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils of tundra, taiga, and forest steppe landscapes

Marina Bykova et al.

Summary: The outcomes of experimental research show that environmentally sound thermal treatment can effectively reduce oil concentrations in contaminated soils, preserving soil fertility in different environments. This eco-friendly solution offers a promising approach for soil remediation in fragile cold regions and resilient temperate climates.

Quantifying natural source zone depletion at petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated sites: A comparison of 14C methods

Anne Wozney et al.

Summary: Surficial CO2 efflux surveys are used to identify hydrocarbon source zones in contaminated aquifers and estimate hydrocarbon biodegradation rates. Radiocarbon is used to differentiate between CO2 from petroleum degradation and natural soil respiration for quantifying contributions to total CO2 efflux. Comparison of methods for collecting CO2 gas samples showed that static chambers and shallow soil gas probes provide reliable estimates of CO2 effluxes from contaminant degradation. Results showed that all methods agreed within a factor of <2.3 for inferred NSZD rates.

Effects of oil contamination and bioremediation on geotechnical properties of highly plastic clayey soil

Araz Salimnezhad et al.

Summary: Leakage of oil and its derivatives into the soil can negatively impact the engineering behavior of soil, but bioremediation proves to be an effective solution to improve the situation. Contamination reduces soil density and compressive strength while increasing soil expansiveness, but bioremediation can decrease contamination levels and enhance soil compressive properties.

Hydrocarbon transformation pathways and soil organic carbon stability in the biostimulation of oil-contaminated soil: Implications of 13C natural abundance

Heng Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that organic compost was the most effective in removing hydrocarbons from oil-contaminated soil, with the majority of removed hydrocarbons being mineralized in all treatments. The stability of soil organic carbon decreased during remediation, attributed to enhanced microbial activity and removal of recalcitrant hydrocarbons.

Regularities of electrochemical cleaning of oil-contaminated soils

Nikolay S. Shulaev et al.

Summary: Electrochemical cleaning of oil-contaminated soils is a promising field for environmental safety, and the correct choice of electrode materials plays a significant role in affecting redox processes and energy consumption. Research has shown that patterns in parameter changes during the purification of oil-contaminated soils can provide insights into the stages, speed, and energy efficiency of the electrochemical process. These results form the basis for designing industrial facilities for soil treatment.

Determination of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in soil using VNIR DRS and PLSR modeling

Kofoworola A. Olatunde

Summary: Visible near infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (VNIR DRS) is proposed as a rapid and cost-effective alternative for soil analysis, particularly beneficial for environmental risk management of petroleum contamination. The study demonstrated the potential of VNIR diffuse reflectance spectra for rapid non-destructive quantitative analysis of extractible total petroleum hydrocarbon in soils. Models developed showed promising results for characterizing petroleum contamination, with potential for local prediction models.
