Critical review on biogeochemical dynamics of mercury (Hg) and its abatement strategies

Arun Dev Singh et al.

Summary: Mercury (Hg) is a natural heavy metal pollutant that is widely distributed in the environment in elemental, organic, and inorganic forms. It is found in high amounts in the atmosphere, soil, water, and plants, leading to contamination of food chains and posing risks to human health. Excessive levels of Hg can also be toxic to plants, affecting their physiological and metabolic processes. Therefore, it is important to study the interactions between Hg and plants and develop methods to detoxify and control its concentration for environmental protection.

Effect of poly-γ-glutamic acid on the phytoremediation of ramie (Boehmeria nivea L.) in the Hg-contaminated soil

Jing Xu et al.

Summary: This study used ramie and poly-gamma-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) to remediate Hg-contaminated soil and verified it through incubation experiments. The results showed that γ-PGA could significantly enhance the translocation of Hg from root and stem to leaf and make Hg in the soil more bioavailable. Batch trials confirmed that γ-PGA could mask the adsorption function of Hg ions by soil organic matter and stimulate the desorption of Hg ions from the soil.

Changes in Lolium perenne L. rhizosphere microbiome during phytoremediation of Cd- and Hg-contaminated soils

Juan F. Saldarriaga et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in the rhizosphere microbiome of Lolium perenne during the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with mercury and cadmium. Results showed that mycorrhizal inoculation influenced the absorption and distribution of metals, and the Enterobacteriaceae family exhibited biosorption and efflux effects on mercury and cadmium. Overall, Lolium perenne has high potential for phytoremediation of Cd- and Hg-contaminated soils in the tropics, and mycorrhizal inoculation and changes in the microbiome can enhance plant tolerance to these metals.

Molecular insights into plant-microbe interactions for sustainable remediation of contaminated environment

Niraj R. Rane et al.

Summary: The widespread distribution of organic and inorganic pollutants in water resources has increased due to rapid industrialization, and rhizospheric zone-associated bacteria along with endophytic bacteria play an important role in the remediation of various pollutants. Emerging metaomics technologies offer detailed information on exclusive microbial communities in the rhizosphere of plants. Additionally, functional methodologies such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics help reveal the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions and their synergistic roles in pollutant remediation.

Responses of bacterial taxonomic attributes to mercury species in rhizosphere paddy soil under natural sulphur-rich biochar amendment

Hualing Hu et al.

Summary: This study found that amendment with NSBC can reduce the toxic effects of Hg in soil, increase microbial abundance, and the decrease in Hg content has the most significant impact on bacterial taxonomic attributes. Furthermore, the addition of NSBC helps to improve the structure of soil microbial communities.

Improved phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soils by Miscanthus floridulus under a varied rhizosphere ecological characteristic

Bohan Wu et al.

Summary: By measuring the heavy metals accumulation of Miscanthus floridulus, rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial community at different distances from the tailing, this study revealed the relationship between phytoremediation ability and rhizosphere ecological characteristics. The results showed that stronger phytoremediation ability is associated with better soil environment and higher vegetation coverage.

Shuwen Zhao et al.

Summary: Ecological restoration is an effective technique for alleviating heavy metal pollution in open-pit mining soils. This study found that a combination of trees, shrubs, and grasses/herbs was the most effective for reducing available Pb content to 33.7% of the control, and reducing Cd content to 60.4% of the control.

Mercury Methylation Potentials in Sediments of an Ancient Cypress Wetland Using Species-Specific Isotope Dilution GC-ICP-MS

Derek D. Bussan et al.

Summary: Wetlands are of great environmental value as they provide food and habitat for plants and animals. A study conducted in an old growth cypress wetland in the Mississippi Delta found that wetlands are hotspots for mercury (Hg) methylation and demethylation rates, with these rates influenced by temperature and other environmental factors. The study also provides baseline data for assessing the impacts of modifying water flow on Hg methylation and demethylation rates in wetlands.

Effect of different ramie (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud) cultivars on the adsorption of heavy metal ions cadmium and lead in the remediation of contaminated farmland soils

Shoujing Zhu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of seven ramie cultivars to remove heavy metals and found that Zhongzhu1 had a higher extraction efficiency for cadmium compared to other varieties. However, the extraction efficiency of lead was similar across all varieties. The findings suggest that ramie can be used as a potential plant for heavy metal removal in contaminated soils.

Cadmium Speciation Distribution Responses to Soil Properties and Soil Microbes of Plow Layer and Plow Pan Soils in Cadmium-Contaminated Paddy Fields

Xiaodong Hao et al.

Summary: The study found that plow layer and plow pan significantly influence the distribution of Cd speciation in paddy fields, with higher activated Cd speciation ratios in plow layer soils and elevated stabilized Cd speciation ratios in plow pan soils. Soil physicochemical properties and soil microbes synergistically affect Cd speciation changes in different ways between the two soil layers.

Changes in clover rhizosphere microbial community and diazotrophs in mercury-contaminated soils

Haixia Zhu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the response of soil microbiome, including bacteria in the rhizosphere of clover, to mercury stress in contaminated soils from Guizhou province, China. High concentrations of soil mercury reduced bacterial community abundance and diversity while increasing the abundance and diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Rhizobium was identified as a biomarker at sites with high soil mercury contents, and the co-occurrence network analysis indicated a positive relationship between the dominant module of Rhizobiaceae and soil mercury concentration. Additionally, soil total nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, soil organic matter, and available molybdenum contents were found to be important factors influencing the microbial community structure and abundance of functional genes.

Mobilization, Methylation, and Demethylation of Mercury in a Paddy Soil Under Systematic Redox Changes

Jianxu Wang et al.

Summary: Study elucidated Hg (de)-methylation in contaminated soil by increasing E-h stepwise, revealing that high MeHg concentration at lower E-h range was due to Hg-methylation bacteria abundance and acidification, while MeHg reduction at higher E-h range was mainly attributed to reduced Hg methylation and increased colloidal Hg formation. These new findings are crucial for predicting Hg risks in paddy fields.
