Ir-doped Co3O4 as efficient electrocatalyst for acidic oxygen evolution reaction

Yusheng Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, a low iridium content (2.88 wt%) iridium doped Co3O4 (Ir-Co3O4) catalyst was developed for efficient acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Systemic characterizations suggest that iridium can be uniformly doped into the lattice of Co3O4, causing a certain distortion. The electrochemical results show that Ir-Co3O4 nanoparticles exhibit significantly improved OER activity and stability in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution compared to pure Co3O4, with a decrease in overpotential from 382 mV to 225 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a decrease in Tafel slope from 101.7 mV dec-1 to 64.1 mV dec-1. Additionally, Ir-Co3O4 demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic durability for continuous operation of 130 hours.

Understanding the stabilization effect of the hydrous IrOx layer formed on the iridium oxide surface during the oxygen evolution reaction in acid

Jun Qi et al.

Summary: In this work, the surface degradation behaviors of BaIrO3 and SrIrO3 catalysts in acid were investigated. BaIrO3 showed quick fading of OER activity due to the formation of deposits that blocked reactive sites, whereas SrIrO3 underwent surface amorphization and exhibited stable catalytic activity with suppressed iridium dissolution. The results suggest that the amorphous IrOx layer serves as a protective layer and plays a role in achieving a dynamic balance at the catalyst-electrolyte interface.

Ambiguities and best practices in the determination of active sites and real surface area of monometallic electrocatalytic interfaces

Sengeni Anantharaj et al.

Summary: Accurately determining the number of electrocatalytically accessible sites (ECAS) and real surface area (RSA) of electrocatalysts is crucial for determining intrinsic activity markers in energy conversion electrocatalysis. Transient voltammetric sweeping techniques, such as underpotential deposition (UPD), stripping, and redox-charge integration, can provide relatively precise determination of ECAS and RSA for monometallic electrocatalysts and electrocatalysts with a single type of active site. However, the transient nature of these sweeping techniques makes the determination of ECAS and RSA less reliable.

Summary: Developing efficient and durable low-cost electrocatalysts is a bottleneck for water splitting using proton-exchange membrane electrolyzers. In this study, a heterostructured CeO2 nanorod-supported Co-Ni-P oxide catalyst is prepared and the valence states of Co is precisely tuned. The increased Co states promote the deprotonation of water molecules and accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, leading to extraordinarily low OER overpotentials.

High-entropy alloy stabilized active Ir for highly efficient acidic oxygen evolution

Han Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a breakthrough in using high-entropy alloy (HEA) as substrates to stabilize active Ir at the nanoscale was reported. Fe, Co, Ni, and Ru were used as stabilizing structural elements. The FeCoNiIrRu HEA nanoparticles were synthesized in electrospun carbon nano-fibers (CNFs) and exhibited thermodynamic induced phase evolution. The FeCoNiIrRu/CNFs showed excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with low overpotential and high mass activity. The hysteretic diffusion effect of HEA inhibited metal leaching and dissolution, leading to excellent durability. The OER performance could be optimized by changing metal compositions and calcination temperatures. In situ Raman spectra revealed the formation of intermediates on HEA NP surfaces. The redistribution of electron density in FeCoNiIrRu NPs promoted the conversion of *OOH and generation of O-2.

Protonated Iridate Nanosheets with a Highly Active and Stable Layered Perovskite Framework for Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: Ir-based perovskite oxides have shown promise as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an acidic medium, but their uncontrollable surface amorphization and structural instability have been major challenges. In this study, we report a high-yield chemical exfoliation method to obtain protonated colloidal nanosheets with an undamaged perovskite framework from Ruddlesden-Popper layered perovskite Sr2IrO4. These protonated perovskite nanosheets show potential to overcome the trade-off between OER activity and structural stability. The 2D morphology and uniformity of these nanosheets enable the fabrication of an ultralow-Ir-loading catalyst film with significantly higher activity and comparable Ir leaching to the IrO2 catalyst film during OER. The presence of structural hydroxyl groups on the surface of protonated nanosheets is found to contribute to the catalytic cycle of OER, representing a non-traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism for the protonated layered perovskite framework.
