Comparison of the In Vitro and In Vivo Electrochemical Performance of Bionic Electrodes

Alexander R. Harris et al.

Summary: The electrochemical performance of platinum electrodes was evaluated in vitro and in vivo, and the study found that electrode polarization significantly affected the electrochemical response. Initial in vitro measurements were not good predictors of subsequent measurements in vitro or in vivo. Electrode implantation affected the electrochemical impedance, with lower frequencies being more dependent on electrode properties and higher frequencies being dependent on solution properties.

Impact of Protein Fouling on the Charge Injection Capacity, Impedance, and Effective Electrode Area of Platinum Electrodes for Bionic Devices

Alexander R. Harris et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of protein fouling on platinum electrodes using electrochemical methods, finding that it affects electrode potential and charge transfer. Adsorbed proteins partially block the electrodes, reducing effective electrode area, charge storage capacity, and charge injection capacity. The diffusion profile towards the partially blocked electrode shows a mixture of linear and radial diffusion profiles.

Motor neuroprosthesis implanted with neurointerventional surgery improves capacity for activities of daily living tasks in severe paralysis: first in-human experience

Thomas J. Oxley et al.

Summary: This study describes the first-in-human experience of a minimally invasive, fully implanted, wireless, ambulatory motor neuroprosthesis using an endovascular stent-electrode array to transmit electrocorticography signals from the motor cortex for multiple command control of digital devices in two participants with flaccid upper limb paralysis.
