Design and Modeling of a Curved Beam Compliant Mechanism with Six Degrees of Freedom

Sheng Lin et al.

Summary: Compliant mechanisms are widely used in various cutting-edge scientific and technological fields. This study proposes a compliant mechanism with six degrees of freedom based on curved beams, which has the advantages of a simple structure and multi-degree-of-freedom. A model of the mechanism is constructed using the isogeometric analysis method, and static analysis shows the generation of six degrees of freedom. A prototype is developed using 3D printing, and a loading test in six degrees of freedom is carried out, showing high linear relations between output and input and low inter-directional coupling of the structure.

Analytical Modeling of a New Compliant Microsystem for Atherectomy Operations

Pietro Ursi et al.

Summary: This work presents a new alternative tool for atherectomy operations that can be scaled down in size, reducing risks for patients and increasing the number of clinical cases. The development involved theoretical work in kinematic synthesis and design stages, resulting in the discovery and adoption of a new multi-loop mechanism and a pseudo-rigid body mechanism. Analytical modeling and joint replacement methods were used to calculate the mechanical advantage of the microsystem, and the results were compared to Finite Element Analysis.

Summary: This paper presents a novel pseudo-rigid model for describing the elasto-kinematic behavior of circular arc flexure hinges under a pure moment. The proposed model, based on kinematic study and second-order motion invariants, accurately describes the relative motion between the connected bodies. The compliant centrifugal pendulum as the vibration absorber with second-order elasto-kinematic approximation

Pier Paolo Valentini et al.

Summary: The study discusses a methodology for designing compliant centrifugal dampers based on the arrangement of a collection of leaf flexure hinges connecting peripheral masses. The design is based on the equations of motion written under the approximation of an equivalent pseudo-rigid assembly. To preserve accuracy, the pseudo-rigid surrogate model is deduced taking into account second-order kinematic invariants and Euler-Savary equations, providing second-order approximation of the relative motion.

Summary: Compliant mechanisms achieve motion through bending-dominated deformation of compliant segments, making accurate analysis dependent on specific flexure hinges challenging. This paper introduces a non-linear analytical approach to calculate the elasto-kinematic properties of planar compliant mechanisms, and uses MATLAB and FEM for validation. The proposed method allows for accurate and fast analysis and synthesis of diverse planar compliant mechanisms with distributed or concentrated compliance.
