Resolving the gravitational redshift across a millimetre-scale atomic sample

Tobias Bothwell et al.

Summary: Einstein's theory of general relativity predicts that clocks run at different rates in different gravitational potential, known as gravitational redshift. Atomic clocks serve as fundamental tools to test this prediction and will eventually enable the study of the combination of general relativity and quantum mechanics. By measuring the gravitational redshift within a millimeter-scale sample of ultracold strontium, a new regime of clock operation is heralded, requiring corrections for gravitational perturbations.

Ultra-low loss visible light waveguides for integrated atomic, molecular, and quantum photonics

Nitesh Chauhan et al.

Summary: This study reports the lowest waveguide losses and highest resonator Q values in the visible range, which are crucial for integrated applications utilizing atomic, molecular, and optical systems. A wafer-scale compatible Si3N4 platform is introduced for fabricating waveguides of different wavelengths on the same wafer. These results represent a significant advancement in waveguide platforms operating in the visible range.

Magneto-optical trapping using planar optics

William R. McGehee et al.

Summary: Laser-cooled atoms are essential for calibration-free measurement platforms and promising for quantum applications, while planar optics, including photonic integrated circuits and optical metasurfaces, offer a pathway to develop chip-scale devices utilizing cold atoms. Efficient use of available light is achieved through metasurface-enabled beam shaping, enabling competitive performance with traditional Gaussian-beam illuminated setups.

Meta-grating outcouplers for optimized beam shaping in the visible

Chad Ropp et al.

Summary: Accurate coupling between optical modes at the interface between photonic chips and free space is crucial for the development of on-chip devices. In this study, an optimized outcoupling method for free-space beams at 461 nm was demonstrated, achieving a 16 dB improvement in the apodized outcoupling strength. The designed and fabricated devices accurately reproduced beams with widths greater than 100 µm.
