The Long-Term Effects of 12-Week Intranasal Steroid Therapy on Adenoid Size, Its Mucus Coverage and Otitis Media with Effusion: A Cohort Study in Preschool Children

Aleksander Zwierz et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to analyze the long-term effects of a 12-week course of topical steroids on adenoid size, mucus, and middle ear effusion. The results indicated that there was no significant effect on adenoid size, mucus, and otitis media with effusion (OME) three to six months after finishing the treatment. Therefore, the decision of adenoidectomy and tympanostomy should not be procrastinated.

Unraveling the role of the microbiome in chronic rhinosinusitis

Alkis J. Psaltis et al.

Summary: This article provides a review of the current literature on chronic rhinosinusitis, with a particular focus on the sinonasal microbiome research, evidence of dysbiosis in the disease state, and factors that may influence the microbiome. The possible mechanisms of the disease, therapeutic implications through microbial manipulation, and deficiencies and limitations of the current research are also discussed.

A Scholarly Review of the Safety and Efficacy of Intranasal Corticosteroids Preparations in the Treatment of Chronic Rhinosinusitis

Luis Macias-Valle et al.

Summary: The scholarly review presents an update on the efficacy, safety, and distribution of intranasal corticosteroids (INCS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) treatment. Studies show significant improvement in disease-specific and general quality of life measures with all formulations of INCS, indicating the effectiveness and safety of both FDA and non-FDA approved options. Novel distribution devices may further enhance penetration to specific areas within the sinuses.

Intranasal Corticosteroids: Topical Potency, Systemic Activity and Therapeutic Index

Peter Daley-Yates et al.

Summary: Intranasal corticosteroids are the preferred treatment option for allergic rhinitis, with variations in potency and pharmacokinetic properties influencing clinical efficacy. While higher glucocorticoid receptor binding affinity is associated with improved topical potency, there is a lack of conclusive evidence on the correlation between topical potency and clinical response in patients with more severe allergic rhinitis. It is important to consider both efficacy and systemic exposure when comparing INCS regimens for therapeutic equivalence.

Roles of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in allergic diseases: The 10-year anniversary for ILC2s

Kathleen R. Bartemes et al.

Summary: ILC2, a type of innate lymphoid cell, responds rapidly to allergen exposure and environmental insults in mucosal organs by producing type 2 cytokines. In addition to being activated by epithelium-derived cytokines, ILC2s are regulated by other cytokines, eicosanoids, and neuropeptides.

Effects of Inhaled Corticosteroid/Long-Acting β2-Agonist Combination on the Airway Microbiome of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial (DISARM)

Fernando Sergio Leitao Filho et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of ICS/LABA on the airway microbiome in COPD patients, and the results showed that fluticasone-based ICS/LABA therapy can modify the airway microbiome in COPD, leading to a relative reduction in alpha-diversity and a greater number of bacterial taxa changes.
