Tailoring the adsorption behavior of superoxide intermediates on nickel carbide enables high-rate Li-O2 batteries

Moderate adsorption strength can enable superior rate capability in a Li-O2 battery. Sputtered MoN nanolayer as a multifunctional polysulfide catalyst for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Summary: In this study, MoN nanolayer-decorated multilayer graphene was used as a layer material to suppress the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and enhance the redox kinetics in Li-S batteries. After the initial discharge process, the MoN layers break up into independent microreaction units consisting of MoN bodies and MoS2 edges, forming an in situ heterogeneous composite catalyst. The MoN bodies can trap LiPSs and enhance their redox kinetics, while the MoS2 edges weaken the mobility of LiPSs through the anchoring effect. Li-S cells using this interlayer exhibit excellent cycling stability under a high sulfur loading.

Boosting energy efficiency of Li-rich layered oxide cathodes by tuning oxygen redox kinetics and reversibility

Summary: This study focuses on the rational design of an energy-efficient Li-rich layered cathode with high energy, power density and cycling stability by tuning oxygen redox activity. The target material Li1.12Ni0.22Co0.13Mn0.52O2 shows ultra-high energy efficiency (90.6%) at 1C, high capacity (>200 mAh g(-1)) with 98.9% retention, and less than 150 mV of decay after 200 cycles. The compositional change greatly improves the oxygen redox kinetics and reversibility, leading to enhanced energy efficiency and narrowing the gap between scientific interest and practical application in oxygen-redox chemistry.
