Fabrication of magnetite nanomaterials employing novel ionic liquids for efficient oil spill cleanup

Mahmood M. S. Abdullah et al.

Summary: The oil spill is a significant pollution source in marine environments, and the use of magnetite nanomaterials (MNMs) is a commonly applied technique for oil spill remediation. This study focuses on synthesizing and using new ionic liquids (ILs) to modify the surfaces of MNMs and enhance their performance in absorbing crude oil. The results show that the modified MNMs achieved high efficiency in crude oil uptake, even at low MNMs:crude oil ratios. The study also found that the contact time had an impact on the effectiveness of the MNMs, with longer contact times leading to higher crude oil uptake.
