Leaflet Resection vs Preservation for Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation: Functional Outcomes and Mitral Stenosis at 12 Months in a Randomized Trial

Makoto Hibino et al.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of leaflet resection and preservation strategies in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation. The results showed no significant differences in mitral valve gradient, exercise capacity, and 6-minute walk test between the two groups at 12 months. However, a larger proportion of patients in the resection group had higher functional class.

Implantability of the MITRIS RESILIA Mitral Valve

Tomoki Ushijima et al.

Summary: This study reports the implantation of a novel bovine pericardial bioprosthesis in the mitral position. The bioprosthesis, called MITRIS RESILIA mitral valve, is attached to RESILIA tissue treated with a special integrity preservation technology, possibly enhancing its durability. The structural features of this bioprosthesis facilitate easier and safer implantability during double valve replacement.

The impact of intraoperative residual mild regurgitation after repair of degenerative mitral regurgitation

Bartlomiej Imielski et al.

Summary: The study found that residual mild mitral regurgitation was uncommon, with late progression to moderate or greater mitral regurgitation being rare and never leading to late mitral reoperation. Experienced surgeons may be better able to determine repairs likely to remain stable, and most cases of mild residual mitral regurgitation do not require re-repair.

Lessons from reoperations for mitral stenosis after mitral valve repair

Ahmed El-Eshmawi et al.

Summary: Postrepair mitral stenosis as a mode of failure in mitral valve repair is less frequent and less studied. Mechanisms leading to postrepair mitral stenosis include pannus ingrowth, leaflet calcification, commissural fusion, and tunnel effect. Reoperative surgical strategies may involve valve replacement or re-repair with techniques such as annuloplasty revision.
