Adherence to the EAT-Lancet Diet and Risk of Stroke and Stroke Subtypes: A Cohort Study

Daniel B. Ibsen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and risk of stroke and stroke subtypes in a Danish population. The results showed that adhering to the EAT-Lancet diet was associated with a lower risk of subarachnoid stroke, while adherence to the Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 was associated with a lower risk of total stroke, mainly ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage.

An introduction to inverse probability of treatment weighting in observational research

Nicholas C. Chesnaye et al.

Summary: This article introduces the concept of inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and its application in adjusting for measured confounding in observational research, using a clinical example in nephrology. IPTW involves calculating the probability of exposure to the risk factor or intervention of interest based on individual characteristics (propensity score), and then calculating weights as the inverse of the propensity score. Application of these weights creates a pseudopopulation with balanced confounders across exposed and unexposed groups in studies, and it can also be applied in longitudinal studies to address informative censoring and time-dependent confounding.

2021 Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Alice H. Lichtenstein et al.

Summary: Poor diet quality is closely linked to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and this scientific statement underscores the importance of healthy dietary patterns. Evidence-based dietary guidance includes principles such as energy balance, consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables, and choosing healthy sources of protein. Challenges to adhering to heart-healthy dietary patterns include targeted marketing of unhealthy foods and structural racism.

An Italian-Mediterranean Dietary Pattern Developed Based on the EAT-Lancet Reference Diet (EAT-IT): A Nutritional Evaluation

Massimiliano Tucci et al.

Summary: The study compared two dietary plans based on Italian food habits and the Italian Dietary Guidelines, revealing differences in fruit and vegetable consumption, as well as protein sources. Despite similarities, the EAT-IT plan showed some nutritional issues, such as higher energy from lipids and vegetal protein, and lower levels of calcium compared to the IDG-based plan. Further studies are needed to determine the potential impact on health and feasibility of sustainable dietary patterns.

Designing Nutritionally Adequate and Climate-Friendly Diets for Omnivorous, Pescatarian, Vegetarian and Vegan Adolescents in Sweden Using Linear Optimization

Patricia Eustachio Colombo et al.

Summary: Low-carbon diets can have positive effects on climate change and health, as shown by the study on climate-friendly, nutritionally adequate, affordable, and culturally acceptable diets for Swedish adolescents. The optimized diets differed from the EAT-Lancet diet, indicating the importance of cultural dietary context in shaping sustainable diets.
