Vascular ageing: moving from bench towards bedside

Rachel E. Climie et al.

Summary: Prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major public health challenge. Identifying individuals at increased cardiovascular risk at an asymptomatic stage is crucial for minimizing disease progression and burden. Vascular ageing (VA) is the deterioration of vascular structure and function over time and can help identify those at elevated cardiovascular risk. However, VA is seldom measured in routine clinical practice due to lack of consensus and practical issues. This state-of-the-art review aims to increase knowledge about VA and promote its routine measurement.

Quantifying microcalcification activity in the thoracic aorta

Registration-based semi-automatic assessment of aortic diameter growth rate from contrast-enhanced computed tomography outperforms manual quantification

Lydia Dux-Santoy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the accuracy and inter-observer reproducibility of registration-based and manual assessment of aortic diameters and growth rates. The results showed that the registration-based technique presented low bias and excellent agreement for aortic diameters, and good agreement and much higher inter-observer reproducibility for growth rates compared to manual assessment. The mapping of diameter and growth rate was highly reproducible in the whole thoracic aorta.

Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity Evaluated by 4D Flow MRI Across the Adult Lifespan

Kelly Jarvis et al.

Summary: This study characterized the pulse wave velocity (PWV) in the thoracic aorta using 4D flow MRI in a cohort of healthy adults. The results showed that PWV increased significantly with age, and there were significant differences between different age groups. PWV was also found to be correlated with decline in cardiac function and reduced aortic blood flow velocity.

Wall Shear Stress Predicts Aortic Dilation in Patients With Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Andrea Guala et al.

Summary: This study assessed the predictive value of wall shear stress (WSS) for the growth rate (GR) of the ascending aorta (AAo) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). The results showed a positive correlation between WSS and its circumferential component with AAo GR. Therefore, the evaluation of WSS may be helpful in the follow-up of these patients.

Summary: This study developed a fully automatic machine learning-based pipeline for analyzing complex aortic flow dynamics from 4D flow CMR. The results showed that automatic aortic segmentation, landmark detection, and flow assessment were consistent with manual operations, indicating the feasibility of fully automatic analysis and its potential for enhancing the clinical use of 4D flow CMR.

Investigation of Aortic Wall Thickness, Stiffness and Flow Reversal in Patients With Cryptogenic Stroke: A4DFlowMRIStudy

Kelly Jarvis et al.

Summary: This study used 4D flow MRI to assess the relationships between aortic stiffness, wall thickness, and flow reversal in patients with cryptogenic stroke and healthy controls. The results showed positive relationships between aortic pulse wave velocity, wall thickness, and flow reversal, supporting the hypothesis that aortic stiffness is involved in this retrograde embolic mechanism.

Central pulse pressure is inversely associated with proximal aortic remodelling

Summary: The study demonstrates an inverse association between invasively measured central pulse pressure and proximal aortic diameter, suggesting that remodeling at the sinuses of Valsalva may serve as a compensatory mechanism to limit pulse pressure.

Summary: This study investigated the predictive value of abdominal aorta calcium (AAC) relative to coronary artery calcium (CAC) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) events in Black and White early middle-aged participants. The results showed that AAC and CAC had similar predictive effects on CVD, with only CAC being able to predict CHD. Additionally, AAC was able to predict incident CVD when CAC was 0.
