Microwave-assisted damage and fracturing of hard rocks and its implications for effective mineral resources recovery

Tao Xu et al.

Summary: Microwave radiation can be used to pre-damage hard rock to reduce drilling and excavation costs in tunneling, mining, and deep Earth energy recovery. A 3D damage-based, electromagnetic-thermomechanical coupled model is proposed to simulate rock damage and fracturing under microwave radiation. The simulations indicate that temperature distribution in rock samples is non-uniform, leading to high thermal gradients that can damage or fracture the samples, and higher power levels and longer durations result in more damage.

Numerical simulation on the in situ upgrading of oil shale reservoir under microwave heating

Jingyi Zhu et al.

Summary: This study presents mathematical models to simulate the temperature distribution, kerogen decomposition, and production efficiency of oil and gas under microwave heating, with a focus on the effects of output power level and thermal conductivity of oil shale on reservoir temperature distribution. The study suggests that intermittent and stepwise heating modes can effectively prevent superheating and improve production efficiency compared to electrical heating.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of rock properties on microwave fracturability and proposed a multi-parameter linear regression model for igneous rocks' Microwave Fracturability Index (MFI). Results showed the significance of factors like effective dielectric loss factor and average grain size, providing an easy assessment method based on petrographic photomicrographs and P-wave velocity measurement.

Effect of microwave treatment on thermal properties and structural degradation of red sandstone in rock excavation

Junhui Yao et al.

Summary: Research on weakening rocks using microwave irradiation has been ongoing for the past 50 years. The study found that increasing microwave power improved heating rate and energy concentration on rock fragmentation, leading to increased porosity and forming fractures within the rock. Furthermore, microwave treatment reduced intragranular fractures, indicating that rock damage was a result of the development of intragranular fractures.

Triaxial Fatigue Behavior and Acoustic Emission Characteristics of Saturated Tuff

Jiajia Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue behavior of water-saturated tuff under triaxial cyclic compression, revealing the effects of confining pressure on microcrack growth, strain increase, and shear fracture surface. Residual strain curves of specimens with different weathering degrees show varying trends under increasing confining pressure. The Hoek-Brown and Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria can predict the triaxial fatigue strengths of the specimens, with the latter showing better predictions.

Effect of thermal shock on laboratory hydraulic fracturing in Laizhou granite: An experimental study

Ning Li et al.

Summary: This study experimentally analyzed the effects of thermal shock on the fracture morphology and injection pressure curve in hydraulic fracturing of hot dry rock. Results showed the formation of a single main hydraulic fracture before 300 degrees C, followed by the potential creation of multiple branching fractures. Additionally, the height difference and tortuosity of the hydraulic fracture surface increased with higher thermal treatment temperatures.

The influence of microwave treatment on the mode I fracture toughness of granite

Zhenlong Ge et al.

Summary: Microwave assisted mechanical rock breaking, a hybrid method using microwave heating and mechanical rock breaking, has potential applications in various fields. Research shows that under microwave irradiation, the fracture toughness and fracture energy of granite decrease with temperature increase. Thermal damage to the rock is mainly caused by the expansion of medium absorbers heated by microwaves.

Thermal effect of high temperatures on the physical and mechanical properties of a granite used in UNESCO World Heritage sites in north Portugal

R. Tomas et al.

Summary: The study found that the properties of granite are significantly affected by thermal stress induced by thermal expansion during heat treatment, especially above 500 degrees C, which increases linear crack density and degrades rock properties. Water immersion cooling amplifies thermal effects, leading to uneven shrinkage and tension stress between particles, negatively impacting granite properties.

A novel true triaxial test system for microwave-induced fracturing of hard rocks

Xia-Ting Feng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a test system for microwave-induced fracturing of hard rocks under true triaxial stress, which overcomes the problem of microwave leakage. By developing a dynamic monitoring system, the thermal response and fracture evolution during microwave irradiation were obtained. Experimental results demonstrate the reliability of the test system and show that true triaxial stress has different effects on microwave-induced surface and borehole fracturing.

Effect of microwave heating on fracture behavior of granite: An experimental investigation

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: The microwave-assisted rock breaking technique offers a promising solution for hard rock breaking in deep drilling and mining engineering. However, the lack of knowledge on the effects of microwave irradiation on hard rocks limits the further development of this technology. Experimental results showed that microwave heating can lead to the generation of micro-cracks in rocks, influencing their fracture properties.

Effects of thermally-induced cracks on acoustic emission characteristics of granite under tensile conditions

Pei Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that as the treatment temperature increases, thermally-induced cracks increase, leading to more AE damage at an earlier stage. The dominant frequency of AE signals decreases with the treatment temperature. The different mechanisms of thermally-induced cracks and stress-induced cracks result in a decrease in high-frequency signals and an increase in low-frequency signals.
